Hi Everyone!

I've been reading posts here and this community is amazing!

I am planning to buy an emerald engagement ring for my girlfriend, and I desperately need your advice, as emeralds are so hard to choose... Diamonds are easier, there are dimensions for everything, but colored stones have a lot more things that can go wrong and much less standardized information.

My girlfriend really wants an emerald ring, I know it's not as tough as diamonds, but that's what she likes, so we will live with the consequences. whatever happens. It's a done deal.

I have been searching stones online, and later I plan to find a custom jeweler to create the ring. I was looking at different sites and reading reviews and found two very interesting sites:
gemsny.com - it seems that they have a good selection and I could go to see them in New York. However, the prices seem to be a bit high..
embassyemeralds.com - I read good reviews about them, and the person selling stones is very helpful and engaging.

I am evaluating to purchase the stone from Embassy Emeralds for $7,700. It's a little hefty price tag, and I know so little about the stones... They can cost 10k or 4K and it's not always as easy to know why.. About the stone: 2.07cts, measures 8.38mm x 7.6mm x 4.65mm, Colombian, probably from the Chivor. I attached pictures zoomed in and from a far. It is not yet certified, but I will get a certification later.

I really don't have who to ask, so I am reaching out to you for some help.

- What do you think about the vendors gemsny.com and embassyemeralds.com? Has anybody dealt with them?
- What do you think about the stone? I really want it to be special; to open up the room; to be a joy to look at....
- What do you think about the price? It's so hard to say what it is worth?
- Do you have any other suggestions, advice? Am I on the wrong path?

Thank you in advance! I am really looking forward to your advice!

Z.

Looks like it has a window.

Greg,
What is a window? How do I know that it has it? Is there a way to check? If it does not have a window, what do you think about the stone/price/specs?

Re: Emerald Ring - so hard to choose the stone... Please hel

I window is a transparent dead spot in the center of the stone. Read this thread before spending that kind of money...https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/new-to-coloured-gemstone-buying-read-this-first.174284/.

I'm not crazy about any of the larger Emeralds on Embassy Emeralds website at the moment, this one looks like it has a better cut though...http://www.embassyemeralds.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&manufacturers_id=&products_id=418.

This stone looks like it would be worth getting more info. on, I love the blue modifier... http://www.lisaelser.com/catalog/item/7541609/7984012.htm.

I second that Lisa Elser stone. I saw it once in person, and remember it being quite a beauty.

Re: Emerald Ring - so hard to choose the stone... Please hel

I have not dealt with GemsNY but found that pricing is high for the quality. Many have cuts that are lacking terribly. I have not dealt with EE either but many PSers have had great experiences.

The current stone posted is pretty but that window is a deal breaker for me. The stone Greg suggested is a much nicer cut but the colour is too light for me. Do you have time on your side to wait for the right emerald?

What about this one from Fine Water Gems?

http://www.finewatergems.com/emerald.html

Many of us have purchased from Gary and been extremely happy with his cutting and customer service. Plus it comes with an AGL report.

Thank you for your comments!

GregS, I read the thread you posted. It's great, but I still feel that I cannot judge the stone like the experts do, as there are so many traps!
The stone from Embassy Emeralds you just posted looks very nice, but just a little too light. I am afraid it would look even lighter in person.
I like the Lisa Elser stone, and with light it would probably open up even more. Does anyone know the price for it?

NKOTB, where did you see the Lisa Elser stone? Are you in Canada? I wish it was on the East Coast!

Chrono, I have time, so I can wait. My concern is finding the right stone and paying a good price for it. Just for my own learning perspective, can you give me some examples of gemsny.com, higher priced stones that are expensive and not as high quality?

SB621, I am looking for a nice stone, bigger in size and higher quality.

Again, thank you all for your replies, please let me know if you see any other emeralds around 2ct that are high quality and would be great for engagement.

I need all the help I can get!!!

Re: Emerald Ring - so hard to choose the stone... Please hel

I agree the Embassy Emerald stone is too light, I posted it so you could get an idea for cut, not color.

You can contact Lisa E. for the price of her Emerald. My guess would be 4-6k a carat, just a guess though...

It's slim pickings for Emeralds out there (online), my suggestion would be to talk with a reputable jeweler that can have some stones brought in for you to see in person. Just make sure you get a detailed lab report before you buy anything.

Re: Emerald Ring - so hard to choose the stone... Please hel

I am in Canada. Lisa was doing some round tables locally, so I got to see some of her inventory. :)

That stone is listed at 6450 currently, but she does give discounts if you're on her email list, that would bring it closer to the 5K mark.

Hi Everyone,

I have some further developments..

My girlfriend likes emeralds because they are green, so I wanted a green stone. She also likes yellow gold. I wanted to see how the Lisa Elser stone looks with yellow gold and if it is not too blue..

I need your advice. From the pictures:

1. What do you think about the stone? Do you see any issues? Will it really open up?
2.Do you think that the stone is green or is it getting closer to blue/green?
3. Do you think the stone is too light green?
4. What do you think about the price ~$5,200 for it?

Thank you very much!

Re: Emerald Ring - so hard to choose the stone... Please hel

I'm by no means an expert, but that is a gorgeous stone and looks amazing with yellow gold. I don't think I've ever seen such a clear emerald. Wow. Gorgeous.

Re: Emerald Ring - so hard to choose the stone... Please hel

Personally I think that Lisa stone is gorgeous. If anything setting it will make it took a tad darker which is fine because it is not too dark.
It is a medium green. Maybe it has a blue modifier but it is by no means "blue".

If she is offering it for 5.2K I think you can't do much better for that size and quality.

Since it is an expensive stone, definitely get a gem report on it, with information about treatments.

If she is using it for her engagement ring she should consider a bezel or semi bezel setting to protect the stone. And NEVER ultrasonicate an emerald!

Re: Emerald Ring - so hard to choose the stone... Please hel

That looks like a gorgeous stone to me!!!!

Re: Emerald Ring - so hard to choose the stone... Please hel

If it's only lightly treated then that's a great price for that stone! And I'm not seeing much blue in the second round of photos, which for you is good, because I don't think that's what you're after. It looks like it has a slight window though, the last picture looks to be taken fairly straight on and I can see that persons fingers through it.

Actually the more I look at it the more I see the window.

Re: Emerald Ring - so hard to choose the stone... Please hel

I should mention this. If your fiance wants an emerald, really do involve her in the process of picking the stone. Every stone has their own characteristics. I love emeralds but some emeralds leave me cold while others may love that look, and vice versa. Some people are bothered by clarity imperfections, others less so as long as the color is good, and so on. So I really wouldn't want to be guessing what her preferences are as regard to the look of the emerald.

Re: Emerald Ring - so hard to choose the stone... Please hel

I'm no expert but that looks like a very nice emerald to me. Good medium color that will be maintained in a setting. Seems to me the fingers are visible through it not because it has a window but because it's so wonderfully clear. Enough jardin to be interesting & genuine, but extemely clean. Its dimensions shouldn't produce a window.

It would look gorgeous in yellow gold, especially nice rich 18K if your budget would stretch to it, but 14K still would be terrific. I'm glad she's not a white gold fan regarding this stone when yg would enhance it so well.

Let us know what you decide!

Hi,

I am sorry but I do not have any expertise in dealing with gems so I cannot comment. I am looking to get an opinion on my own gem so that is why I am posting on here. After you help this gentleman can you please read my post? "Opinion on Sapphire Quality/Price " is the title. Thank you so much for your help!!!!

Re: Emerald Ring - so hard to choose the stone... Please hel

I definitely see a window, regardless of the dimension - it is the angles that count. Still, a bezel setting should minimize it since it isn't that large to begin with. No blue at all on my monitor. If anything, it is a medium green with a slight yellow modifier.

Re: Emerald Ring - so hard to choose the stone... Please hel

I agree. At least from my monitor it is a grass green, not really a bluish green. That color will look wonderful with yellow gold.

Re: Emerald Ring - so hard to choose the stone... Please hel

The top one appears to have better color, but poorer clarity and cut than the second one.

However, both have nice color, nothing to scoff at. The second one is a bit lighter than ideal color, it looks like Chivor material, rather than Muzo. Chivor material tends to be lighter, but have better clarity than it's deeper green Muzo counterpart.

Emerald prices have really jumped in the last few years or so, therefore, I cannot comment on if that is a fair market price.
