Engagement band thickness - is 2mm too chunky?

Seems like most bands are 2mm or thicker. My gf wants a more dainty band but I've found some of the thinner bands (1.5mm say they can only take 1 carat stones, and I'm targeting a stone between 1.5-1.9 carats). I know she likes a band like this, which is 1.75 mm.

1. How chunky does 2mm look (she's a size 7 ring)?
2. Can someone suggest thinner bands, 4 prong, simple, white gold? I looked on James Allen, Whiteflash, Brian Gavin but didn't really see anything great...

Thanks!

2mm isn't chunky at all. It's quite dainty, and you really wouldn't want to go much smaller for reasons of stability and metal integrity.

For settings, BN has plenty of simple settings. Here are two that fit what you're looking for; it's just a matter of if it fits your style or not:

I'd recommend looking at Vatche and Stuller settings; they have many gorgeous pieces that might work for you. Again, it depends on what you mean by "simple"... I had a girlfriend who said she wanted a simple setting and yet when I took her shopping to help narrow things down for her BF she ended up choosing a three-stone with filigree (and still called it "simple")

I don’t think 2mm is chunky at all. My ering is 2mm, 1.5 carat size 4. On a larger size I’d think it might appear thinner? My thumb ring is also 2mm size 6 for reference. I really like the 2mm width. Dainty & feminine without being fragile for every day wear.

Virtual look of a 1 carat stone, 2mm band on a size 7 finger...
Ditto ILikeShiny...you dont want to go too small so it keeps it shape.

Like people, cameras make everything look bigger than they actually are! 2mm for a ring is still VERY dainty, while being durable enough for daily wear. Any thinner, and you risk the shank going out of round. In real life, when you see it, you'll realize that 2mm is quite thin and delicate.

If you do wind up going thinner, like 1.5-1.75mm, make sure the band is thicker to compensate, as in "height from finger" to add strength.

2mm is probably as thin as you want to go for stability, rings which have shanks under 2mm are prone to bending and breaking.

2mm is a great size! My engagement ring has a 2 mm band size and my wedding ring is either 2mm or 2.5mm. It's very dainty and still feels sturdy. I will probably always stick with this width in the future. I wore a 3mm diamond band before I got my wedding band and that still looked good too :)

I would not go smaller than 2 mm, otherwise it may be too delicate. Mine is 2.5 on my size 7.5-8 finger and it looks plenty dainty.

I have a 2mm with a 2.11 stone and I am currently looking to change into a thicker mm setting. While my setting is definitely sturdy I would like something more substantial.

rimmel hot metal love with lovey dovey and ru faf on one nail2.jpgI think mine is 2mm (only measured with a ruler). It’s not a solitaire but I’m a US 7.5 ish (UK O and a half, but it’s currently loose because it’s cold)

like PP said, if you want the setting to be thinner along the finger, it will need to be taller off the finger). A knife-edge setting is a pretty classic way to achieve that...but 2.0 mm is still very very thin and about the thickness of a US nickel for reference.

The setting you posted is basically a Tiffany solitaire replica. The Tiffany ring is basically a softened knife-edge ring which is varies from around 1.9 mm to 2.3 mm (stone size dependent).

Good replicas include:

These are all also good vendors for diamond (additional vendors we often see are JamesAllen, BlueNile, HighPerformanceDiamonds, and others).

I'm a size 6.5/7 and even 2mm is too thin on my hand and looks awful. 2.5mm is as thin as I would go on a size 7.

I agree that 2 mm is plenty thin for a structurally sound ring. Maybe if she would like the appearance of a thinner band go with something like a knife edge which would give the band a thinner look? Though I have heard that knife edge rings can take a bit to get used to as they are not very comfortable, but maybe others could confirm

I have a 6.5 ring size and my ER band is <2mm, I think that it's too thin to be honest. 2-2.5mm looks better to me and is still very dainty.

Knife edge def makes the ring appear thinner compared to a flat band and you can soften the knife edge on the sides so it doesn't press annoyingly against the neighboring fingers. She has to like that style though.

Good luck!

Even 2.5mm is vey dainty. Size 5.75. *edit* Added the photo in the post below *edit*

It also spins and moves more being a narrow band. It would be even more dainty as a size 7.

I would advise against having anything under 2.5mm. And for a Size 7, I would consider 3mm. We went with a custom WF design.

Thought I would upload a better photo but can't work out how to add it to my original post. Hope that helps the OP
