Hello Everyone!

Over the summer I began searching for a sapphire engagement ring for my girlfriend. While going through some local stores it quickly became apparent that I knew nothing about sapphires or where to start. Then I came across this forum and I'd like to say a general thank you for being such an amazing resource on learning about sapphires and e-rings. I've tried to read through many of the threads and check out the vendor list pinned to the first Colored Stones page.

Despite reading and seeing some stones in person I'm a bit apprehensive about selecting a stone and I'd like to ask for your advice/opinions on some of the stones I am considering, but first an overview of the ring specs under consideration:

Ring design: Looking to go with an emerald-cut center stone held by claw prongs (single/double-not sure yet) with tapered baguettes on the side. She really likes the classic/elegance of this style.
Ring material: White gold or platinum
Center stone: My girlfriend loves the darker/deeper blue colored sapphires that almost border on black. Black diamonds are also being considered, but mainly I am looking at dark blue sapphires. Size range of 1-2 ct.
Budget: I have currently budgeted 3-4K for the whole ring (setting + stone).

I've been having a difficult time finding dark emerald cut sapphires, but here are some I have been considering:

These all look like amazing stones, after reading what you are looking for and viewing the stones I think that the Roger Dery stone or the Dan Stair would be the better options, I think the mastercutgems one has to big of a window which does get annoying when looking at a stone. Dans stone looks stunning and the price is also very attractive for a untreated sapphire :) hope my two cents helps

Thanks for your advice and pointing out the window effect!

I think the larger corners on the second stone is a nice cut.
Not sure if it would fit with a stone that size but wondering if a double claw prong could work there

Been trying to focus on the stone first and then find the setting, but I have another question for anyone. Would it be reasonable to create a ring where the setting could be significantly more costly than the center stone?

One in particular I think my girlfriend would really like is:

That particular piece is out of my price range for the setting alone, and another option by James Allen is also quite more expensive than the stones above.

So I'm a bit confused if that is normal for the stone to be less than the setting, or if the stones I found above are not reasonable choices for the centerpiece of an engagement ring?

Appreciate any insight :)

I think it just kind of depends on what you like in both stones and settings. For me, I love the style of a setting as much as the stone. For reference, I am currently have a ring made where the setting is roughly 5X the price of the stone .... For my engagement ring (a diamond), the stone and setting were almost the same price.

My engagement ring center stone (also a sapphire) was 1/4 the cost of our setting. :D

I would like to see more emerald cut options before deciding since none have any particular outstanding qualities.

I know a dealer that might have a stone you need. In a past I purchased a few emeralds from him on eBay. I didn't see him listing sapphires but he also sells at gem shows, privately and he is big. Check his store - antonowsky - and if you will not see sapphires there ask him.

Thanks goldie_locks and sydneyatl for the perspective on cost ratio.
And sydney is that your ring in the avatar? It looks beautiful, the color is so rich!

Thanks for the feedback and other options chrono and chroman.
I had not initially considered radiant cuts, but great point it does keep the rectangular silhouette. I will add that style into the search.

The two Pearlman stones look great and are such a rich blue.
Do you think the color of those stones would darken at all upon setting?

I may have found another option, the fifth one down at this link (Stephen Perry) http://www.steveperrygems.com/gems/ceylon.htm

What do you think of this stone? I think the blue may be dark/rich enough.

Appreciate the store contact recommendation Emerald Lady, I will reach out to them.

Thanks again for all you input!

Ooh, looks lovely to me from the picture. For all stones that you're considering I would ask for hand shots and videos from the vendors.

This is probably very naive of me, but I didn't even know that was an option.
Thanks a lot! I will start contacting some vendors and requesting videos.
I think so far I like best the first Pearlman radiant chroman posted and the one above from Steve Perry.

The photo of the Steve Perry stone is such a rich, vibrant blue - love it!

Thanks! It is! It turns a lovely blue-purple outside in the mornings and then magenta with the occasional flash of red indoors. I'm so glad we decided to go with a colored stone instead of a diamond - so much more interesting IMHO ;)2

Emerald cuts will always sparkle LESS than most other shapes, they are used to show color (of emerald) which is fine and good, but if you want a sparkly gem you need a cut with more facets.
