Engagement Ring Shopping: $2500 Budget, Seeking Advice

Hello,

Long time lurker, first time poster. It’s time for me to buy an engagement ring. :)

My gf knows that I prefer to shop online and she specifically stated her preference for a ring from a local merchant… due to concerns about service. So, I *tried* shopping locally but have been really disappointed so far with the cheesy, used-car-salesman schtick. So, I’m starting to look online again.

I have had good luck with past diamond purchases from BlueNile. They have a nice CashBack promotion with FatWallet.com right now. However, obviously, I would prefer to pictures of the actual diamond before purchase. More recently, I’ve been browsing the websites of the handful of preferred merchants that are frequently mentioned here and I’d be comfortable working with any of them.

I know that there are some members who love to help people who are shopping, so here are my thoughts. I’d appreciate any suggestions or feedback about my purchase criteria and also suggestions of actual diamonds or rings.

Budget thoughts:
I’m not necessarily cheap, but it’s important for me to find a ring that’s a good value. I do appreciate the value of good service, generous upgrade policies, and honest straight-forward communications. I do NOT find value in brand names just for bragging rights. I’d like to find a ring around $2000 - $2500 and would expect to spend 2/3 of the budget on the stone and 1/3 on the setting.

Size thoughts:
With my budget, I expect I’ll find something around 1/2 carat. I would not be comfortable with a stone under 1/3 carat. Are there “sweet spots” in value with certain diamond sizes? For example, is a 0.44 carat diamond more likely to be a better value that a .51 carat because it’s not quite close enough to be a nice “round-number-sounding” half-carat? If that’s the case, I’d tend to go with a smaller stone and spend the extra money on a fancier setting.

Cut/Quality thoughts:
I greatly prefer a high-quality diamond to a large diamond. When browsing BlueNile, I only considered their “Signature Ideal” cut. When looking at other vendors, I tend toward their equivalent signature cuts. Rounds seem like the best value.

Setting thoughts:
I prefer a setting with additional diamonds and still in the process of understanding what's commonly available. It’s important for the setting to be robust to withstand craft work, home projects, yard work and general clumsiness. :)

Well, thanks in advance for your assistance. I’ll gladly share photos of my selection.

Thank you for the quick response. Option 2 is my favorite of those presented. :)

I'm in NorthEastern Wisconsin.

Have you talked with your girlfriend about what kind of rings she likes? Would she like a round center stone or a fancy cut? What would be her order of preference for the 4 C's? That might help us narrow down what you're looking for.

Gypsy's choices are beautiful. I'd caution you though: if your girlfriend is particularly "clumsy" or hard on her hands, having pave in the ring might not be a great choice. Those little stones are prone to falling out.

Yes. Her preferences are for something that's timeless (i.e. non-trendy). She (and I) prefers Round and Princess cuts; others seem too exotic. She doesn't want something that's too "flashy" -- we are in the Midwest and our friends and family are generally of modest means. Around here, a center store larger than 1 carat would be obnoxious and draw the wrong kind of attention.

In order: Cut, Carat, Clarity, Color

Thank you for the insight. Are the channel-set side stones more robust than pave?

Yes. Definitely.

That should be a beautiful stone, but you're paying a premium for the Hearts and Arrows. Do you know how color sensitive both of you are? I know you listed color as the least priority. Cut should always be the first priority, so the second one listed tells me what's important to your girlfriend -- carat size. I know you don't want something obnoxiously big, but to give you an idea of how far your budget can stretch:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1539635.asp

It has a good HCA score (https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca), has great clarity, but is a J color. Some people aren't bothered by J's in the slightest -- I'm one of them -- but some people can see the color.

As for the setting -- it's not my style, but your girlfriend may love it. You know her better than we do.

I don't have any input as far as the specific diamond options go, but I would like to point out that James Allen has a link near the drop down menus that will show pictures of previously purchased rings in that style. I would check that out, and make sure that the size diamond you like matches well with the setting, to your preferences.

I like the setting you have chosen personally. Very pretty with a little
extra interest without being over the top.

My question to you would be about color and clarity. Is there a reason you are looking
at G vvs2? You will probably find that a lot of people here
are going to suggest adopting some extra flexibility in the clarity and color a bit and going for a
slightly bigger stone with ideal cut specs. Say maybe H si1 or vs2? Perhaps even I? That's about
Where I start to get color sensitive, but some people are fine even lower and something
around .6 like uberclaire suggested would be elegant and definitely not over the top.

Thanks for the tip; I can barely tell the difference when examining them, and likely could not see a difference in more casual "real word" settings. These look like other nice J's:

The best recommendation so far is Gypsy's...and I also like option #2. I wouldn't worry so much about the Pave on the band...

I would not hesitate to go with option #2. Also, I would NOT recommend getting a J color for an engagement ring unless you know for a fact that your GF likes warmer diamonds. BG Blues will give you a nice balance of value and excellent quality within your budget. I would NOT be concerned with SI1 clarity on the Blue either...

Thank you Gypsy and all who mentioned the BGD Blues.

I strongly considered this stone, which is now reserved (likely by another poster here), but just didn't feel comfortable with the K color -- especially without an actual photo available yet:

Instead, I went with this one ( HCA 1.8 ):

And this setting:

Ended just a few dollars over budget.

How'd I do?

Stunning! I'm sure she will be thrilled!!!

It'll be gorgeous!
