I've been searching for 2 months now, and today I looked at an 1.82 SI2 F and a 1.84 SI2 D right next to each other. On a whim, the jeweler showed me a 1.72 SI1 H and placed it off to the left of these two stones. I have been seriously considering the F for a month now, and the F and D both had very nice sparkle outputs. But that H stone was just going crazy on the left side, almost seizure inducing. Whatever sparkle the F and D had, the H was outdoing it by at least double. I left for a lunch meeting and all I could think about the entire afternoon was this crazy H and went back to see it in the evening.
The H, SI1, 1.72:
HCA: 1.6
7.63 - 7.68 x 4.76 mm
Carat: 1.72
Color: H
Clarity: SI1
Cut, Polish, Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: none
Table: 56%
Depth: 62.2%
crown: 35.0
pavillion: 40.8
Girdle: medium to slightly thick (faceted)
The F, SI2, 1.82:
HCA: 1.8
7.78 - 7.83 x 4.86 mm
Carat: 1.82
Color: F
Clarity: SI2
Cut, Polish, Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: none
Table: 55%
Depth: 62.3%
crown: 36.0
pavillion: 40.6
Girdle: thin to medium
I feel like this was a cut epiphany because all of a sudden, I really don't notice the color difference between the D/F/H although I have been obsessing over D-E-F color the past two months.
As far as the eye clean epiphany, I can't see the feather in the facets and tiny crystal in the table the H SI1 is supposed to have even with the loupe. The F SI2 has a comparably larger crystal in the table that I can see without the loupe and although I don't mind it, I found myself preferring the invisible inclusions in the H SI1.
The only place I am a little torn is in the size of the H. I got so used to seeing 1.78 - 1.85 carat stones, the 1.72 is feeling shy. However, I can't get the crazy sparkle out of my head. I have a size 4.5 finger and want an 18K white gold setting. I am obsessing over one tenth of a millimeter at this point I could keep looking to find a bigger stone, but it probably will be hard to find something satisfying because I think I might have unintentionally became a diamond snob today.
The other surprising part is that the H comes in just below the budget my FF set, although the jeweler suggested he could just raise the price to meet the budget, haha. My FF jokingly called me a miser the other day (I am the saver, he is the spender), and here I am being a miser without even trying.
