Hello,

My fiance and I are thinking of purchasing an eternity band. My mom is telling me that it''s not practical because all the diamonds will wear down eventually. Her reasoning is that there''s no bottom to the ring.

How durable is an eternity band? Would you recommend an eternity band?

Thanks,

One more thing to consider: Eternity bands are probably not as comfortable to wear.

How come? Sorry for a dumb question.

My two cents from someone who owns an eternity band engagement ring and loves it.

a) Diamonds aren't practical. So your mom's argument goes right out the window. Secondly, how often are you scrubbing your hand against something abrasive? Top or bottom, you hand goes through the same amount of usage, so top or bottom, it gets the same treatment. I opted for solidly set prong-set stones with my eternity band, so that there is less chance of losing a stone. But I also get my ring checked eveyr 6 months at the jeweler to be sure that all the stones are still in there, nice and tight, and if the metal wears down, we fix prongs or make a new band. It's pretty easy. In my opinion you shouldn't be looking for something that will NEVER need maintenance, if you like diamonds, you will be doing some maintenance on that ring most likely, even if its just checking prongs.

b) Eternity bands are not uncomfortable to wear, but it would depend most likely on your size of stones. Mine is very small stones, and at first you do need to get used to having the stones against your fingers on the insides, but I didn't get cuts or chafed skin (dry skin in the winter !) or anything, and now I don't even know when my ring is on or off (dangerous) because I am used to it. Now if you had something like a 6carat eternity band with something like .30c stones all the way around where you couldn't close your hand all the way or similar, yes that would probably be uncomfortable but again, you'd get used to it. If the ring you are considering is smaller and more typical eternity band style (e.g. 1c or similar), then you are more than fine with comfort IMO.

I love eternity bands and think they are alot of fun to wear....I say go with what your heart wants and forget the 'practical' nature of the equation, purchasing an eternity band could never be called a practical choice, but if you want it, you should have it.

Best of luck with whatever you decide!

Another important point is that eternity bands can't usually be sized.

I had an eternity band from the 12th anniversary of my first marriage. It was 22 .05 carat stones. The setting wore, the stones didn't. It takes an enormous amount of abuse to wear down diamonds. It was very comfortable, and it could be sized because there was a short (about 3/8 inch) bar of solid gold on the bottom. If you want maximum protection and comfort, a channel setting will protect the stones very well and won't have prongs that can be bumped and twisted where losing stones could be a possibility. Check out http://www.precisionset.com/classic_frameset.htm for example.

It was a toss up between a plain platinum wedding band or an eternity. Fiance decided on eternity cuz that's what I wanted. I hope I made the right choice for everyday wear.

Thanks Everyone,
