Expert in NYC to ID my stone?

About 30 years ago I bought a second hand ring. I have no idea what the center stone is. It's bezel set. I believe they said it was a ruby but I know it's not possible. I think it's a spinel. Anyone know who I could take it to that would tell me?

I don't believe there is much value to the stone or ring so I don't want to pay much for this answer.
