I've bought a BlueNile diamond.
http://www.agslab.com/pdf_sync_reports/104047871002-PLDQR.PDF

The rep called me:
The diamond is laser inscribed with a GIA number:
http://www2.gia.edu/reportcheck/ind...tVerification&reportno=2125558541&weight=1.30

The AGS report is newer than the GIA report.
Measurements are identical, only the color grade differs and GIA didn't see the feather.
Why didn't AGS mention the laser inscription?
That's my most important question.

It is not the first time AGS gives higher color grades than GIA, I feel AGS is more lenient than GIA in matter of color.
I really want this diamond, but should I ask for a discount?
I've paid for I color.

Thank you!!!

I would ask AGS or ask BN to send it back to AGS to confirm that is the same stone and if so, why is the GIA inscription not noted?

Hi dear Stone,

As you can guess, I want this stone badly.
If you look at both reports (measurements, inclusion plot), it is the same stone.
I really want my ring before Xmas.
So I don't want to send it back to America.
Do you think AGS can answer without seeing the stone?

ya, I looked. Look like the same inclusion plot.

Definitely ask for a discount as you are now not sure if that is really the AGS stone but it is definitely the GIA stone with the associated color grade.

Stone, thank you so much for your opinion!
I answered on a very friendly way:
'feel free to offer a goodwill gesture'
BlueNile is very professional with me, I like their service.
I'm also happy to learn that this diamond has a EX/EX/EX GIA.
AGS ideal polish/symmetry doesn't always mean EX/EX at GIA.

As for the color, it already happened in the past that I saw a diamond listed 2 times at JA.com; with GIA and AGS report.
And it that case, AGS also gave a higher color grade than GIA.

My guess is that diamond dealers try GIA first, if they feel the color grade is too harsh, they try again at AGS.
I'm sure I'll love my new puppy and its 2 passports.
And I think it will be a white J or a yellow I. ::)

This is the weird part, if the cutter feels that it is too harsh, they could have gone without the inscription since it is a DQR instead of a DQD type report. Then they could have sent it to AGS without this 'evidence'. Maybe send in to AGS by diamond vendor that bought it in-house and probably do not have a grinding wheel to polish away the inscription?

Intriguing little diamond... like me...

I also remember that BGD priced my AGS L color like a M, because he estimated the diamond wasn't a L...
I would choose AGS every time for the ASET picture of the 3D scan, but if I really want a D, I guess I will need a GIA report.

Update: BlueNile is offering me a small 1% discount (additional to the bankwire discount) on the diamond.
I feel it's an honest proposition.
I must say that till now I'm pleased with their service.

Stephan,

Given the GIA-inscription, you are sure that you are getting that stone. It is extraordinary for the AGS-report to have almost identical numbers, but it could be that there is a mix-up of stones.

Since you have the stone in Belgium, I suppose, why don't you pass by and have us take a look? The stone should also have the feathers, indicated by AGS. We should be able to locate those.

Live long,

Hi Paul,

Thank you for your proposition!
I didn't see the stone at yet, but once I receive it, I'll try to locate the tiny feathers wih my 12x loupe.
It won't be easy, even GIA didn't notice them...
If I don't find them, your offering of assessment will be very valuable! :))

Anyway, I'll ask AGS the question why they didn't mention the inscription.
I can understand that an AGS report with a comment like "GIA ### has been inscribed on the girdle of this diamond." will look ... farcical, especially when GIA was stricter.

I'm happy, because the diamond has both GIA/AGS best cut grade/finish, and a laser inscription is an additional level of security.

::)

I think it's probably just a typo when AGSL generated the report and they forgot to include the reference to the inscription. If this is the case, it should be a simple matter of calling or emailing them and having them issue a new report with the inscription mentioned. I would expect them to be happy to replace the document quickly at no charge and without the need to resubmit the stone for a new inspection. If there's an AGS member store or titleholder nearby (or an AGS client like Paul), have them check the stone to confirm that it's there if you're concerned that it may not be the correct stone for the paperwork. If you want to come to Denver, I"ll be happy to take a look at it for you. It's a short flight and we had over a foot of snow at Vail this week. :sun:

Thank you Neil for your invitation, I'd love to see Denver, but I'm afraid it won't be possible! :)
If I can find the feathers by myself, I won't require a new report.
A new certificate would only be useful in case of resell. (Did I ever do something like that? )
The GIA inscription will make things easy for me: I'll print a copy of the report and make the jeweler sign a receipt on it.
Most jewelers in Belgium don't know AGS but they do know GIA.
