this is a totally unimportant question, but i had to ask.

yesterday my FI was looking over my shoulder when i was on pricescope and he was like "argh, stop calling me fee! i hate that!" i was astonished that he read it that way, as i always said "f-eye" in my head.

i know FI is short for fiance, so i guess the shortened version would read as ''fee'', but i think the ever so frequently used ''hi'' has influenced my internal pronunciation.

how do you say it in your head?!?! i need to know!

there is no "NEITHER" option! I see FI, and I say "fiance" in my head. I''ve never said "f-eye" or "f-ee". Maybe I''m weird!

one vote for fee!

I''m with CJ on this one - I always think fiance, or, sometimes I just think the individual letters - "F I".

Oh, can I change my vote! (haha!) I actually thought "F-eye" meant saying the indiidual letters, F then I. That is what I do. Or "eff-eye."

Haha, this is so confusing :)

Ditto. If anything, I'd say "fee" I guess. Yanno, fee-ancé. Not feye-ancé.

Or "FI" like "si" or "mi," although my photographer works for "mi belle" studio which they pronounce "MY belle"... this drives me CRAZY.

someone either has too much time on their hands (which i don''t think is the case) or someone''s brain is fried from too much wedding planning

I always think "fiance" in my head and would "say" it as the letters "F and I" ... I would have never ever thought "fee" for FI even though now I guess it kind of makes sense. I guess I "say" FI the same way that I would "say" the letters D and H whenever I see DH in someone''s posts, right?

hee heee

According to the dictionary it is pronounced fe (long e)-ˌän-ˈsâ (long a)
I know I am nerdy,

but when I am not sure I look things up in the dictionary.

I normally see the abbreviation "FI" and it just translates into my brain as "Fiance", but if I had to vote and were to pronounce the word it would be F-eye!

It is intersting to see how all our diamond and wedding crazy minds think and read things!

I don''t really think either. As someone else said, I just kind of translate it straight into fiance when I''m reading it. If I had to pick one I would probably pick F-ee, but it sounds weird.

INteresting. I never thought about how I pronounced it before. Actually, I think I just skip over the pronunciation part in my head.. but when I see it I know "okay, that means fiance". But I don''t pronounce it any particular way.

Same here.

Just like DH becomes "dear husband" in my head when I read.

haha....what a funny question, though valid! Haha. I always see two capital letters (F and I) and just say the letters. D-H or F-I or I-M-O. It''s like another little language in my brain, with immediate translation. I even almost refer to my fiance as "FI" in real life. No kidding - I''ve caught myself twice.

I also just pronounce the letters if I think of pronouncing it at all. I think it is just from years of online chat and video games. So for the most part I just think of it as any other abbreviation, like when someone says they are from CO, I think "Colorado", not "ko or seeo".

Fiance shortens to ''eff-eye'', which shortens to ''fye''. In my head at least...

I pronounce fiance as fee-on-say, so go with F-ee.

I'm a bit confused ... do some people pronounce fiance as fi-on-say (with fi pronounced as the fi in 'fire') I've never heard it pronounced that way before - it it an american thing???

oh no no no. i''m pretty sure it is "fee-on-say" worldwide (or at least usa, canada and english speaking europe wide)
I was just asking how people interpreted "FI" as an abbreviation in their head.

sorry ladies for not better articulating what i was trying to say! (and for not adding more choices!)

Me too!

I say F-EYE. How funny. Never thought about it before.

lol I think "F"-"E", but that''s just because I''m a Frenchie and "i" is pronounced "e" in French.
20.gif
The proper pronounciation for fiancé is "fee-An-say", not "fee-On-say", btw.

fee-AN-say like the "A" in "sand"?
40.gif
Or like the "a" in middle-america "an" that sounds more like "un"?

I think mimzy meant "on" like the word "on the table." Like fee-AHn-say.

I could get into phonetics like skippers here
3.gif
haha

I think and pronounce MI as M-EE, things like IMO as IN MY HUMBLE OPINION and think of FI as F-EYE but pronounce like fee-AHn(the table)-say... DH I've thought of as DuH but say Dear Hubby
2.gif
...dunno why but I hate the abbreviation hubby. And for that matter, I try to use the word fiancé as little as possible because when I say the word I always think of that Seinfeld episode with a character that said the word fiancé every several seconds... it's so irksome!

neither, I usually think F.I. or fiance

I just think Finace in my head.

Pretty much all these new acronyms translate to their intended meaning in my head and I never stop to notice it.

I can only imagine what your FI would think if he ever picked up my cell phone and saw some of my outgoing text messages...even I am often surprised people understand what I am trying to say!
