Anyone have a ruby and diamond ring? Or a red spinel and diamond ring?

I have a custom project underway that I was originally envisioning F VS sidestones for, and the vendor is offering me bigger G VS sidestones. They are said to be super white, but on the monitor at work I still see a little bit of gray.

If given the choice of .3 ct F VS and .4 ct G VS, which one would you go with to pair with a red center stone?

I would go with the G ones, unless they were poorly cut. To be honest, it really takes a trained or highly perceptive eye to notice more warmth in diamonds beyond H color. If you’re someone who is bugged by diamond color and you need bright white diamonds, then go with the F ones.

Now the caveat here is that the diamonds are truly those grades, and not elevated to higher grades by the vendor.

I personally don’t think you’d see much color difference between G and F sidestones. I would personally want bigger ones if you think it would be more proportional to your main stone!
Here’s my ruby with E-F pave (much smaller than your sidestones obviously)

And pink sapphire with G color 2mm halo

I think both look super white! This is coming from someone who chose an I color diamond ER for budget reasons though ;)2

Omg I love your ruby! The ruby ring I already have is in the same style with F VS diamonds that are a little bigger than yours. I do see the difference in color between the F and the G, but so much depends on the lighting that I don't know if it's because of the overcast sky or what.

When it comes to color, my brain functions similarly as when it comes to music. I can discern relative differences, so if you lined them up, I'd be able to order them by color grade, but give me a single stone and I won't be able to say which color grade it is.

I really envy people who can tell at a glance what color grade a diamond is, and people who know which exact note it is they hear.

That ruby is gorgeous!! Such beautiful elegant rings you have @scouty.

Here's my ruby and diamond ring. My diamonds are G color. Most of my other rings the diamonds are E or F. I don't notice the color of the Gs.

Are you setting your dream ruby, voce?
I was a music minor in college with an excellent sense of relative pitch. I always aced the sight singing part of our theory exams :-) I'm also good with discerning color, probably one of the reasons I gravitate towards CS instead of diamonds. Maybe those abilities are linked?

Haha, @leslie1956 yes, you guessed right, I am getting my dream ruby set in my very own ring design. However, I don't want to share pics on PS in case someone copies my design. Don't want to be imitated.

If you're interested and promise never ever to share it with anyone else, I can email you pictures.

Haha, I somehow self-studied and got a 3 on AP Music Theory exam. I was most afraid of sight singing, because I hadn't practiced much, and I don't think the exam gave you the starting note. The only notes I know absolutely are middle C (from piano lessons) and the A above middle C, from a couple years playing violin and having to tune every day. Whenever I sight read without knowing the starting note, I always had to scramble to figure out what it sounded like by running up or down from the only two notes I knew on an absolute basis.

I'm so happy for you, voce, that's awesome! I would love to see pictures and of course would never share them.
When I took theory they did give us the first note, but still, it was very intimidating for most of the students. It came easily to me and my scores would throw off the class curve for the other students. I had eight years of piano lessons and played flute and piccolo in band. Dad had a masters degree in music and worked as a school band director for much of his career, Mom also sang and played the piano. I was lucky enough to be exposed to music from the time I was born :-)

Voce - thanks for initiating this thread. I have two rubies i plan to set in two different three stone rings with diamonds so the feedback is really helpful

Your talent must be genetic as well! Sent you pictures over email.

Glad that this is helpful to someone else, too! I'm actually setting mine as a 5 stone ring, but I'm interested in hearing why you're planning two different three stone rings. Are the sidestone diamonds going to be different shapes in the two rings, or will your two rings be differing in other details?

Wow this is going to be stunning. What shape are the .4 ct G sidestones? Would love to hear more deets on what you are planning!

Scouty, it's getting set in my own design, one that I feel intense personal pride for. I am going to not post it publicly on PS for reasons of not wanting people to copy my design without giving me credit.

The two rubies are both Tanzanian. I used to live there so i value Tanzanian over other locations for sentimental reasons. One is an unheated 5.2 mm round from Winza mine cut by Gene at Precision Gem. It has a wisp of blue sapphire in it That I love so I don’t want a complicated setting. Plan is yellow gold 3 stone with round diamond sides. Other ruby is from Longido mine, unheated 7.5 x 5.5 emerald cut. I’m looking for simplicity so I wish to make a traditional 3 stone in white gold with diamond traps as sides.

(Edited to fix typos)

Ooh, our rubies are sisters! I'm setting a ruby from Mozambique with a jeweler, but I have an engagement ring with a Tanzanian ruby and also a 6mm round from Gene at Precision Gem that has a smidge of blue sapphire on the outside edge.
