Recently I was picking up a custom piece from my jeweler, and it got stuck on a finger I don't usually put rings on. Needless to say, the jeweler whipped out her bottle of Fantastik and shot my hand immediately, saying "we use this on all customers who have stuck rings." I was horrified although it worked in getting the ring off.

I've worried ever since, did this damage the gold. And ironically I recently noticed the band has discoloration on it now, but may have been there from the crafter's table, who knows.

I can't stop worrying and obsessing about this. I paid a lot to have the ring redone and there's no returns. And if it is bad, does it progressively eat away the gold. I wish I could roll back time and say no thanks to the shot of Fantastik. Or am I being silly and naive, please say I'm naive and this is an age old, safe remedy that doesn't hurt your ring.

Can you post pictures? What metal is it? 14k, platinum...etc.

Hey. It's 14k white gold. The smudge as I'm calling it I didn't notice when I picked it up, of course the day I picked it up it got shot with Fantastic before I left the store. Could it be grease from the crafting wheel/desk area?

I returned about a week later with the ring to have it appraised, and I didn't notice it then. Again, maybe its grease from someone handling it?

I'm meticulous with my jewelry and it didn't so much as touch anything but tap water while I've had it. Thanks for your opinion in advance. Feel free to tell me I'm looney and need to go get my ocd checked out.

They told me to bring it back and they'll replate the rhodium (I'd asked if it was rhodium plated to begin with and I don't remember an answer on that, but they offered to just plate the thing if I drop back in. The ring was designed at a shop outside the actual shop I go to for things in town, if that makes sense. It was sent away. So maybe it came back with the smudge. My fear it is a Fantastik smudge, or basically, is Fantastik okay for rings that won't come off and I'm being freakish. idk.

I definitely see what you are talking about. I would be upset and concerned like you. I looked up the product and it is a cleaning solvent and cleaning products should not be used with jewelry on. They should most definitely rhodium plate it for you. White gold is a combination of alloys that includes rhodium… that is what makes it white and not yellow gold. Over time white gold needs to be replated. That is why some people prefer platinum. However, you don’t get the bright “white” luminous shine that white gold offers with platinum. Neither is better, it’s just personal preference, how much maintenance you want to put into it, and also platinum is heavier. My fingers are arthritic so I prefer gold over platinum in that regard. Also, prices can play a role in choice but over time that is variable as to which is more expensive.

Ah, thank you for your response. I don't think they do platinum plating. The ring is a monster already at 14 grams. The custom commission of it was just finished at the first of this month, so it shouldn't have any wear and tear. Brand new built from CAD design and diamonds I had from an ended marriage.

So do you definitely think my "smudge" is from the one time shot of Fantastik I should have declined when I picked my treasure up that day and tried it on the wrong finger? Or do you think it's more like a smudge of grease from being on crafters desks?

Thank you so much.

They also put it in the "steamer". Does that do this, too? Thanks.

Steamer is perfectly fine - they do that all the time. The ring would be thoroughly cleaned upon completion so I don’t think it is any materials from the bench. There is no plating in platinum. Only rhodium plating for white gold.
There’s nothing you could have done in the short time you had it. Rings are meant to be worn (within reason, as I said don’t use cleaning products, don’t wear in the pool and ocean, and don’t font hinge like gardening or working with tools. They just need to replate it. What is odd is that they used Fantastik… what IS commonly used to get a tight ring off is windex, the glass cleaner. I think someone messed up!!!

Maybe it was Windex and I was confused, I had to be confused. They do such good work and would never risk something bad. Good to know it is Windex not Fantastik they use to remove rings!

I took it back today and they replated. All seems ok now!

Great! Enjoy!

We need a hand shot =)2

It’s safe to use household cleaning products to at contain ammonia like fantastic or windex or me clean on gold and platinum and diamond. Well made fine jewelry is very hardy. I just cleaned my 18k and platinum diamond ring this morning by soaking it in a mixture of household ammonia and water. Lots of people use me clean etc to wash their jewelry every day. You need to be careful about using undiluted cleaners or leaving the jewelry too long in the cleaner.

I don’t know what dark spot you are talking about in that photo.
