Hello!

I was wondering what songs you danced (or will be dancing) with your father''s to? I''m trying to pick ours, but I''m torn between a few. I also wanted something that wasn''t used all the time and more original. Any suggestions???

My Daddy and I will be dancing to the country song "I loved her first." The moment I heard this song on the radio I teared up and knew it was the perfect song for my Dad and I. It''s becoming more popular now, but I still love it.

My father and I danced to "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys...

and My stepfather and I danced to "Daughters" by John Mayer...

Both were very special and emotional!

Dad and I danced to ''I Hope You Dance.''

That song makes me cry every time I hear it. Random question but you wouldn''t happen to know who did the background vocals on it, would you? I love that guy''s voice but I hear it so little in the song! I''ll have to go listen to it and maybe it will be one I consider if I do the father/daughter dance. Thanks for the recommendation!

My dad is an Elvis fan. We danced to "Can''t Help Falling in Love with You."

It''s totally out there and I''m sure this won''t help you, but we''re dancing to the song "Turning towards the morning" by Gordon Bok. He''s a (somewhat obscure) Maine folk singer who my parents used to see performing at bars when they were in grad school, and I grew up listening to him on cassette tapes. It''s my dad''s favorite song EVER. I decided it would be our dance long before I even met fiance

The chorus goes:

"Oh, my Joanie don''t you know,
that the stars are swingin'' slow.
And the seas are rollin'' easy
As they did so long ago
And if I had a thing to give you,
I would tell you one more time,
That the world is always turning towards the morning"

It just sort of epitomizes all the advice my dad has given me over the years - how no matter how bad things get, time will always be moving, this too shall pass, and you''ll get through it. I guess it''s not a typical father-daughter dance sentiment, but it really just fits us.

I am having trouble with this too! I will be dancing with my step-dad because my father passed away a few years ago, so that already makes it hard enough. I love my step-dad and I am grateful to have him in my life, but most "mushy" father/daughter songs are too upsetting to me. Plus we don''t really have a mushy kind of relationship. I think I need something classic and sweet, but not neccessarily father-related.

Hi FF! What about dancing to Louis Armstrong?

We''re dancing to You Are My Sunshine - the bluegrass version from O Brother Where Art Thou. My dad used to sing this to me everynight when he put me to sleep, so it definitely has sentimental value for my family.

We also thought about What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong.

That style would work really well...can you think of any specific songs that might work? We are having a band, who will be playing mostly classics and swing, with a female lead singer -- so something Ella Fitzgerald or Billy Holliday would be right up our alley - I just don''t know enough songs to think of one.

My step-dad used to always call my glasses my "peepers" and reference the song, "Jeepers Creepers," which I once thought would be really cute...but then those horror films came out and that is all I can think of when I hear the title. Plus, I looked up the lyrics, and I don''t know if they really fit for a father/daugher dance...

"I don''t care what the weatherman says,
When the weatherman says it''s raining,
You''ll never hear me complaining,
I''m certain the sun will shine,
I don''t care how the weather vane points,
When the weather vane points to gloomy,
It''s gotta be sunny to me,
When your eyes look into mine;

Jeepers creepers, where''d ya get those peepers?
Jeepers creepers, where''d ya get those eyes?
Gosh all, git up, how''d they get so lit up?
Gosh all, git up, how''d they get that size?
Golly gee, when you turn those heaters on,
Woe is me, got to put my cheaters on,
Jeepers creepers, where''d ya get those peepers?
Oh, those weepers, how they hypnotize!
Where''d ya get those eyes?"

What do you guys think?

I adore "You Are My Sunshine, but I already want to dance to it with FI!

That would make for a really cute f/d dance, though! Good pick!

ETA: Are you going with the same lyrics as the one in "Oh, Brother..." ?

I am dancing with my dad to Frank Sinatra''s Summer Wind. When I was a kid, he asked me to put his Frank Sinatra cd''s on to a tape so he could listen in his car. He said his favorite song was Summer Wind, so I had some extra room on the tape and inter-jected it every three or four songs.

If we''d had a father/daughter dance I would have choosen Kind and Generous by Natalie Merchant:

La-la-la-la...
You''ve been so kind and generous
I don''t know how you keep on giving
For your kindness, I''m in debt to you
For your selflessness, my admiration
For everything you''ve done, you know I''m bound

I''m bound to thank you for it

La-la-la-la...
You''ve been so kind and generous
I don''t know how you keep on giving
For your kindness, I''m in debt to you
And I never could have come this far without you
For everything you''ve done, you know I''m bound
I''m bound to thank you for it

La-la-la-la...
Oh, I want to thank you for so many gifts you gave
The love, the tenderness, I wanna thank you
I want to thank you for your generosity, the love
And the honesty that you gave me
I want to thank you, show my gratitude
My love, and my respect for you, I want to thank you
Oh, I want to thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you
Thank you, thank you, thank you
Oh, I want to thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you...

Kimberly! Natalie Merchant is one of my all time favorites! SHe''s amazing in concert. It''s funny you mentioned that song -- I had typed up the lyrics on pretty paper once and given it to my siser as a gift.

Zoe, she is so fabulous...I was a fan of 10,000 Maniacs and so sad when they split up. It''s such a simple, sweet sentiment without being too sappy or overdone...I just love that song.

My dad and I are dancing our F/D dance to "Save the Last Dance for Me" by Michael Buble. We''re doing that at the end of all the dances, kinda adds to the symbolism for me I guess! He''s just rapt ''cos he gets to do a foxtrot

Wow...you all have such great ideas! I love the Natalie Merchant song, that''s definitely one that''s on the top of my list! I was also thinking Lullabye by Billy Joel, but the second I play, I start crying so, I doubt I''ll be able to dance to it. I like Isn''t She Lovely by Stevie Wonder since it''s a more upbeat and happy song.

dh and his mom danced to Louis Armstrongs what a wonderful world. as a surprise, during their dance i asked dh''s dad to dance with me. that''s the closest i got to a father/daughter dance. it was a perfect song for us four. short and really sweet. not too mushy. perfect. plus, our wedding had a very new orleans/french vibe so his music was a great fit.

Sorry Zoe I don''t know who did the background vocals on that song.

We picked that song based upon the limited song "catalog" of the band we chose. And when I say limited I mean like REALLY limited. But it was nice because it was not sung, but played by a steel pan band.
