Hi everyone,

I was wondering if you could share some feedback on the following diamond, as I'm quite new to the world of ideal diamonds and this is my first overseas, unseen purchase. I'm pretty nervous, but I probably shouldn't be as I've heard really good things about Brian Gavin's diamonds. I've purchased this one, but I still have time to swap, if there's anything I should be worried about.

I'm mainly just nervous about the diamond's graining as I've heard it can cause haziness in combination with fluorescence. Also, the grade-setting inclusion is a cloud. Do you think this would make it appear cloudy at all?

These are the specs and the link:
1.32 G VS1 Black by Brian Gavin Round
Medium blue fluorescence
7.05 - 7.07 x 4.36 mm

I'd love to hear any thoughts or suggestions. Thank you! :)

Where did you get the idea there was graining?
The cloud is tiny and I do not think a concern.
I have 2 diamonds from BGD. They are beyond words worth every penny.
That 55 table is drool-worthy… my fav!
I have a G color BGD with med blue fl and it makes that stone rival color to super ideal studs and a 3x solitaire I have that are E color.
This is an amazing diamond to have and I’m super envious!

Did you purchase it? I hope so - AMAZING!

Hi Headlight,

Thank you for your reply! I did end up purchasing, but just thought I'd check with the experts here on Pricescope, as I've learnt so, so much about ideal cut diamonds and jewelry here.

I honestly don't know the difference between different table numbers; why is the 55 your favourite?

I'm relieved to hear that the cloud isn't a concern. I noticed the graining in the Office and Fire videos of the diamond, but I think the graining is quite minor? I can see it along the arrows of the diamond, and sometimes in other areas too in those videos.

I was just concerned because of something Garry H said when I asked a question about the effects of internal graining in combination with fluorescence in a diamond. This is what he wrote:

"Sorry, but even moderate graining in my experience will result in haziness when the diamond is viewed in light with a UV content. Shaded daylight or light passing through a normal window will often have strong enough UV to cause a problem (triple glazed would cut out indirect UV, but not direct sunlight UV).
This has been my observation for some years and was confirmed by this GIA study: https://www.gia.edu/doc/SU21_Luo.pdf"

Interesting that the report doesn’t mention anything about graining. Have you discussed your concerns with BGD?
As for the 55, I just love the visual of a small table facet and specifically seek that out.

Also since you have already purchased you will be able to check it out for yourself to see if it does what the study indicated. I hope not.

Perhaps ask BG for some video in direct sunlight before they ship to you overseas?

The clarity is VS1 with a small cloud. The report makes no mention of graining. I would ask Brian Gavin his opinion but am doubtful that graining is causing any issues.

I emailed BG and a sales consultant said it's just reflections of the facets and shouldn't be an issue, and I've asked for videos but they seem very busy. I'm going to ask BG to ship straight to David Klass for setting then pick it up personally during a layover, as I feel like shipping to Australia then back to the US would be too stressful. But I will make sure to check the diamond in sunlight when I get home!

I will try asking again today; hopefully they are less busy right now.

Do you think I should talk to Brian Gavin personally? I'm not sure how to contact him, and I've only spoken to a sales consultant from BG so far.

I read an interesting thread where people were discussing how GIA misses internal graining quite often, but I think in the case of this diamond, the internal graining is quite minor and hard to spot without magnification.

I emailed BG and a sales consultant said it's not internal graining but just reflections or polish compound, but the lines look like graining to me, so I don't know

It probably isn’t internal graining but sometimes what we see we can’t unsee. Maybe it would be better for you to choose another diamond? If you are uneasy now, you may always question it. Don’t pay money to buy something that might drive you crazy - know what I mean? Otherwise, yes, ask to speak with Brian personally. He should be happy to address and discuss any concerns you are having with the diamond.
