Hi all,

I have a sapphire from Gene at precision gems. It’s supposed to be purple and red but the shift to purple is too severe for me. I thought I’d ask if anyone is looking for such a stone. If so let me know through my loupe Troop link and I can share all the details.

Do you have any pics? Sorry, don't want to waste time asking questions via LT, but just checking whether there's an info on CS?

Here are some! I had just taken off to take pics but it’s surprisingly hard to capture. It’s 6 mm or so and above a carat and unheated. These are all indoor pics in somewhat low but natural light, I’ll take some outside and post later too. Thanks for your interest.

Can you please post the red photos?

Gorgeous! Dust for a quick sale!!!!

Red and purple are my favorite colors, but I tend to like super saturated and pure hues. The red I see from your photos is reddish pink, so I don't feel that that's a stone I must have. I actually think the purple is gorgeous. I'm on a ban, though, until next year or I would have emailed you.

Totally understand the ban! That’s the only way to stop! But in reality this stone is not at all pink. It’s my camera which is changing the colour. I’ve tried many times but it keeps doing the pink thing, don’t know why cause it’s like a nice red to my eye. I’ve never had this much problem photographing a stone haha

Try placing other colored backgrounds to adjust the camera contrast? Like a red scarf next to it and see if the red comes out?

Try a grey background? And mix some green in the pic? I find the color goes off when the background is too dark or white which throws the white balance off. Throwing some other props in the background helps solve the white balance issue, or use a gray background.

I used to have that problem all the time; my vivid red e-ring stone looked pink with cell phone camera. Then I bought a Canon Powershot for a little over $100, and it can capture color properly.

Thank you for all your kind suggestions but I am thinking this stone is way too much trouble. I think I will send it back, I just thought I would offer it up to someone here but have not received enough interest. @voce would you like it if I am able to show how red it is ? Just thought I would confirm once because you also said you are on a ban.

Tried this btw. Closest to the real colour I can get is exactly like this picture but it’s brighter in real life.

Yeah, I think you should send it back. I need to be good, and I already have 10 sapphires. Sorry the stone didn't work out for you. I don't know what you paid for it, but in general from the stones I've looked at from vendors, I don't find the price premium for the changing color worth it, especially since incandescent lighting is getting less and less common.

Hypothetically speaking, not that I can afford alexandrite or anything, I'd rather spend the money on a ruby than on an alexandrite because with what you'd pay for alexandrite, you can buy a top-notch ruby.
