I finally found the prettiest ruby.... I've been wanting an untreated ruby for some time but they are hard to come by for the price. I fell in love with this one. .75 ct. Kinda glows in the right light. I'm sending it to GIA. Whats your opinion on the color and what I can expect on a report?
Its from Winza Tanzania

forgive hte second pic, its a still from a video so not too clear but I do love the way it kinda glows.

How should I set it? I'm thinking an asymmetrical cluster setting with diamonds and white gold?

Big congrats, @Bonsai! What a fabulous precision cut. It's a little silky, which is adding to that glowy effect you mentioned. And that can be really pretty! It may also speak to its untreated nature, as rutile inclusions (which cause the silk) often dissolve during heat treatment. Naturally, you want to be careful of clarity enhanced rubies, as they run rampant, but the GIA will test for that. About the color... in the video still, it looks like a nice, vibrant red. In the first two photos, I'm seeing a touch of orange. Is that present in person or just in the photos? If the stone does have an orange modifier in person, the GIA *may* consider it a fancy sapphire as opposed to a ruby. Lord knows I can never get a gem to show its accurate color in photos, so my eyes could be deceiving me. Do let us know what the GIA says! Thanks for sharing and enjjoy!!

Just saw that you are thinking of an asymmetrical cluster ring with diamonds. Don't know how I missed that. Anyway, I'm thinking of the vintage "spray rings" but maybe modernized with a little more streamlining. I tried to post some pics but apparently they weren't available for sharing.

Looks beautiful! I like the silkiness and the glow. A cluster setting sounds lovely!

Thx all. I know its silky but I dont mind gems like that tbh just personal preference and in this case I will take the glow

I was wondering bout if they'd try to call it a fancy sapphire. I'm undecided but it appears more on the red side than some other rubies I've seen that are pretty pink tbh. I'd have to look more into orange sapphires vs rubies.

I haven't seen it in person having it sent straight to gia to confirm everything. It does appear to have a hint of orange though I'll say I've bought other stones from this person and the color was pretty close.

Heres a pic in other lighting, outdoor and indoor.

This would be my choice, modified without millgrain as I don't like them.

Wow that’s a gorgeous color!

Oh, I saw that one! Looked interesting. Full disclosure, I wasn't very satisfied with a tourmaline I bought from that vendor. The photos and videos weren't accurate to the stone in person. The stone was surprisingly dark in person and there was a notable chip in the stone that hadn't been disclosed. I'm curious to see how this one turns out in person because it looks great in the photos for the price

oooh interesting when was this? did the vendor take it back?
I bought a Montana Sapphire from awhile back and I was quite pleased. It looked a little blue in the picture and in real life it was a touch green but I do acknowledge that it sort of has a shift on rainy days from quite blue to greenish on other days. It seemed well cut and came out pretty

Both times I bought stones and IDK if you did but I had him send extra videos in multiple lighting. Some of those were the stills from the split pic above. Seeing it in enough lighting I feel like the color is fair. I dont know how picky GIA is though on rubies vs sapphires so I was curious about that. I feel like its a really great ruby for the price. I Hope it comes back as such but seeing several other rubies I feel it stands a good chance.

Here's the sapphire I got from him. The first is his pic and the second is mine on my finger. The GIA reported it as a green blue sapphire. Sometimes it does look greenish, sometimes it looks blue. Pictures seem to tend to make it look more blue, as you can tell looking at the diamonds around it the pic is generally on the blue side. TBH I was pretty surprised GIA came back with greenish first but sometimes it looks a little green idk.

One thing I also do that might help some just fyi since I'm a photographer, a lot of vendors dont properly color correct their photos. This affects the ultimate color of the gem. I look for white in the photos and videos. Does it look white? Does it look more on the red/ green or blue/ yellow? Correcting those color shifts make the white pure white will give the most accurate color of the stone. I also look at skin tones. I can think of 2 major sellers that seem to often have a severe purple/ red shift to their images. this will make red stones appear a lot more red same for purple.

In this example here is a pic of the ruby with snow in the background .Is the Snow White? Well almost. Using a color picker I can see the snow is a touch on teh warm side, this makes everything in the image appear more "yellowish". Correcting the color (second pic) to make it a bit cooler of course changes the images color a bit, but I dont feel it sufficiently nor drastically changes the ruby color in this case. Some stones I've seen yeah a lot. I feel like it looks very ruby in all these pics. Any thoughts?Screen Shot 2022-02-20 at 3.20.51 PM.pngScreen Shot 2022-02-20 at 3.23.05 PM.png

@Bonsai I think some of his stones are cut by him and some are cut by others and he is selling them. The ones he cuts always seem like good buys. This one was cut by somebody else. I didn't even contact him about the inaccuracies because it wasn't a terribly expensive stone. I just gave it to one of my friends who makes jewelry and said they could have it or throw it away

are we talking about the same person? I know theres another major cutter who does fantasy cuts who has someone else outsource the cheaper gems. this person I got the ruby from I believe cuts all their own and doesnt have a huge stock

I believe @Bonsai’s ruby is from cutter/jewelry maker Sennin Esko. Seems like a really talented guy.

Woo hoo! Great news.

can someone tell me how does GIA specify colors in ruby? are they all labeled red or are they labeled things like pinkish red, all that jazz.

Red is what they give to anything going from pinkish to purplish red. My first ruby purchase was a red GIA ruby. It didn’t look really RED red, rather purplish red.

They use vivid red sometimes, although not in a consistent manner if my opinion.

I would not pay attention to how they describe the color, it means little to nothing.
