I have an awesome yellow gold mount from @Niel. I was going to put a moissanite in, but I'm now thinking that's boring! Any chance I could score a coloured stone on the cheap? I like blue, plum, emerald green, hot pink, and royal purple. I also like zircon blue and some sapphire blues. Could someone make a suggestion as to what kind of stones can be purchased in my price range (around $100) that might look good in a yellow gold mount?

Thanks in advance! After years spend in Rocky Talky I never thought I'd move on to coloured stones... but here I am! :) Happy to be here!

You like topaz blue right? If so you could get a topaz for cheap and it’s hard enough you could wear it most days

Yeah, I do! :)
Good idea

Plus my birthstone is topaz <3

Welcome to the colorful side of the forum!
Here are some options from Multicolour in the 6mm to 7mm range. There are lots of other vendors that would have something for you as well, Multicolour just has a search function that makes it quick and easy to find size and clarity ranges.

If you like purple, amethyst is absolutely an option and it looks great in yellow gold. Purple garnets are more expensive but there are some bargains available.

My humble opinion is “don’t be too restrictive with your budget”. It costs around $100 just to set a gem (more if any prong work is required) and the setting itself is worth a substantial amount.
For $100 you won’t get much other than amethyst, Citrine or blue topaz. Nothing wrong with that by any means but I’m just wanting to point out that’s it’s a bit of a false economy to restrict your gem value when there’s other costs and value to consider.

You know what? You’re so right. I really need to factor that in. It bit me in the butt the last time ;)

Gosh I’ve learned so much but I’m still really green!

You could try danburite, garnets, or tourmaline if you can bump your budget up just a little. There’s a big color range out there, so have fun looking!

Sticking to your $100 budget, you’d be looking at blue topaz, rhodolite garnet, amethyst, welo opal, kyanite and apatite. The last three come in beautiful shades but are very soft so maybe not for a first CS.

Why don’t you take a look at Yvonne Raley’s Etsy shop and see what you have a feel for? She has a range of interest CS and she’s having a 15% sale right now.
