Finally, something GOOD in the news.

Thank you for sharing, Kenny. This is truly wonderful news. I'm so glad the girl was returned and those boys truly are heroes.

I have to admit that I had seen that headline, "Teens Save Kidnapped Girl! On Bikes!" screaming at me from my computer, kenny. It just isn't the kind of story I usually click on! I am afraid that I am going to be reading about extra-terrestrials or the Kardashians if I do. So I am grateful that you brought this to my attention. It is, indeed, a really NICE story for a change!!!

Hugs,
Deb

How about the story about the 2 Kennedy brothers for a kind-of happy one. Out sailing, they came on a sea turtle -- one of those gigantic fellows -- with a fishing net wound around his head & flippers. They stopped & freed him, watched him sail off himself. No good deed goes unpunished, however: The U.S. Govamint got in touch to inform them it's against the law to touch a wild sea animal. (I hope they flipped the guy the bird.)

OMG!
How stoopid the guvmint can be!

Laurie- Thanks for sharing that story. I had not heard it and it is wonderful.

kenny- Did you and Skippy do anything strange that might have resulted in some mind-switching when you were at that Pricescope Get Together in Las Vegas? After I read the above story I realized that Skippy should have posted it. Weirder and weirder....

Yes, Andrey transmorgified Skippy and I.
It only hurt for a moment. ;)

Yes, but if it had been an ordinary citizen rather than a Kennedy, there would probably be a hefty fine involved. It's happened. There's a procedure to follow for dealing with distressed wildlife.

...or maybe no one would ever have known. My best friend's son, who is 24 and mentally ill, picks up wounded animals that would not make it on their own and, if he cannot get a veterinarian to see them, tries to heal them himself. His family has eight dogs and several cats, so their vet has treated a field mouse successfully and found it a home with a man who gives homes to mice. But he does not help with wild birds. My friend's son has been trying to become a certified wildlife rehabilitation specialist. Unless he can become one, he will continue to rely on the Internet for information on how to treat badly wounded animals. He cannot pass one by and he isn't someone who kills them to put them out of their misery. He would never carry a gun.

Good for him, Deb! The world needs those types.

No doubt. By the time the guvamint gets around to it, the turtle would've been long dead. Make 20 phone calls, get forms, fill them out in quadruplicate, file them in DC, wait till people are done watching kumbayah videos, then wait some more. Yep, we do things procedurally in the U.S. of A., all right. And you're right, then we fine folks who simply save a life, because you can no longer simply free a turtle from a net before it drowns. We have rules for those things here.

If it hadn't been Kennedys, you're right, nobody would have known. Of course, even Kennedys can keep their mouths shut. Better that way.

Obviously not (Kennedys keeping mouths shut). It's in the news...

There are pros and cons to both sides (citizen intervention, going through the proper channels).

But my original point was that had an ordinary citizen (not a Kennedy) helped the turtle, there would likely have been consequences. Happens all the time to private citizens just trying to help the poor wildlife.

Thank you for the kind words, Laurie. I was afraid someone was going to blast me for what he does. (Someone may yet, of course, and although I have no control over him whatsoever, it is clear that I approve of what he does.) This young man grew up on a large piece of property in Maine although his family has generations of roots in Greenwich, Connecticut. Besides the dogs and cats, there were large goats and chickens. Although the eggs of the chickens were eaten and the goats were milked, none of the animals were killed. They were all treated like pets.

His mother went to a country fair one day and her husband bought her a baby chick. Because of the very special way that they treated animals the chick grew into a chicken who lived to be 16 years old. The family had moved back to Greenwich from Maine because they needed to do so. The chicken lived in the house and had her own crate. Her name was Miss Peepers and she weighed less than one pound, but was kept incredibly clean and communicated with my friend all day just like any other pet bird. She had to be kept from laying eggs because the stress of laying an egg would kill her, so she was kept in the dark! She came over to my house with my best friend during a power outage when it was very cold because she couldn't be kept warm enough in blankets in their house when they lost power. (Their cats and dogs, of course, at least had fur!)

My friend couldn't bear to collect the eggs from any of the hens they kept in Maine because the hens didn't want to give them up. Her son and husband did it although it made her son sad, however. She has made me sensitive to a lot of animal issues I would not, otherwise, have been.

Miss Peepers died this year after a long, wonderful life being cherished. Her picture is attached.

Libby, I understand & agree. Stinks, huh?

Deb -- holy mackeral! 16 years old? Wow. She's beautiful. Why would it stress her so much to lay an egg? Or would the stress be in losing it? Do chickens think all their eggs are babies-to-be? Surprising, when they lay them every day, even when not fertilized. My sister had a few kinds of exotic chickens -- they didn't even remember where they laid their eggs, plopped 'em down all over the ranch, let alone care if we ate them.

I had a pair of zebra finches once -- they, ahem, multiply like craaaazy. My how-to-Finch book said the female would have a nervous breakdown if the eggs just disappeared, & to give her marbles to sit on if you don't want a zillion baby finches hatching. I did, of course, but she still got a little barmy, sitting & sitting eggs that never hatched. These were fertilized ones, though.

Sounds like a fascinating family. I would've been over at their house every day as a kid.

Yes, I read about this! So nice to see that people still care about others! They really stuck their necks out for a stranger, and they really deserve congratulations! :appl:

I love this story! Maybe we could make this a sticky and just post good news stories here?

I believe we once had a good news thread, and that Skippy started (and nurtured) it. My allusion to Skippy being the one who should have started this thread (rather than kenny) was made in part because of her sweet nature and in part because her sweet nature had led her to undertake that project once in the past.*

LOL!

Yes, Kenny, apparently you are chopped liver.

Oh Gosh Kenny you are too funny. I had a good belly laugh over your chopped liver but you must admit...that chicken was cute!~

kenny posted asking if I thought he was chopped liver. Last night I tried to find a suitable rendition of, "We are Family", but all the versions were too girly. I had wanted to show that I considered kenny an integral part of the Pricescope family, albeit one more likely to post controversial topics than sweet ones!

Today I went looking for a more masculine song that I felt reflected my impression of who kenny is on Pricescope (or at least one of kenny's many facets on Pricescope). One of my favorite songs is, "I Am A Patriot" sung by Jackson Browne. When I went to YouTube I saw that it had been composed by Little Stevie VanZandt of Bruce Springsteen's E-Street band. I loved the way he perfomed it on YouTube, but his introduction to it (in my opinion very eloquent) was not Pricescope-friendly. It was laced with rock-group language.

I finally settled for linking to Kris Kristofferson's version of "I Am A Patriot" because one can hear the lyrics clearly. It reminds me of kenny because kenny doesn't like to be infantilized. (I had considered using Phil Ochs' song, "I'm Going To Say It Now".) He likes to speak his mind but he doesn't like to see people oppressed. By anyone. And in this song it is clear that the singer won't be pigeon-holed as one group or another. kenny always says, "people vary". This is only my view of kenny of course, not "The True Kenny", but at least it shows I don't see him as chopped liver!
