Hi Everyone!
So *thrilled* to be planning my wedding...untill it comes down to the REAL planning part.

Eric and i are pretty much in line to have a back yard BBQ wedding, but the martha stewart in me would like it to have a cohesive look.

My question to everyone is, besides the typical red/white checkers, what colors remind you of picnics/spring/bbq/wedding?

TIA!!!

Lanterns...sorry I'm being a spaz today...I think yellow. And just bright happy colors in general...

Sunflowers! Green, yellow and blue!

Lanterns...
Yes yes yes and YES! Chinese paper lanterns hanging from trees, lighting the way along footpaths, being set alight into the sky at the end of the night. Lighting is key (and can be done relatively cheap!

Who was it who posted their AMAZING outside wedding with yellow as a colour scheme. They had the frame of a marquee (tent whatever you call it) but without the fabric and had lanterns and lights along the whole structure.

Makes an amazing Martha Stewart style look to any wedding.

This is one of the nicest backyard weddings I''ve ever seen....they used yellow and green. Linky

yellow, white and blue is also a classic combo!

I have no idea what her name is in the forum, but I know exactly who you're talking about!! Her wedding was in the recent issue of THE KNOT (Fl edition) and it was awesome!!

I'll see if I could look it up and post later with her name and pictures so you can have an idea jcarly.

Back on top, for a BBQ you may want hay or twiggy decorations on the table...maybe not hay but you know what I mean...I hope. Ok, I'm just rambling now! But I'll be back with better ideas!

Agreed! I was trying to remember where I had seen that wedding because it jumped instantly to my mind when the OP said she was thinking backyard wedding. Thanks for saving me the trouble of searching for it!

Yay, jcar!!! So glad to see you posting here in BWW!!!!
For colors, I''d look for bright and lively colors such as yellows, oranges, blues, even purples and pinks. You have such a huge array of bright color palettes to pick from. Here are some pictures on sites I found that may help

Here''s one with the lantern idea!

Also, here''s a link on theknot.com that has galleries of user weddings that are strictly outdoors Link

This site is awesome for coming up with color palettes. Link

Wow, this is really spectacular! I love the strings of lights and the yellow accents the most. It's very crisp and down-home looking. The clothesline "slideshow" is really cute, too.

i LOVE LOVE LOVE the lantern idea.
oh and mason jars to hold your flowers.

these are called "upscale backyard"-might be a little too upscale for the backyard feel you are going for.

A few years ago someone posted pictures (from MS magazine, I think) of a picnic-style reception that featured 40''s and 50''s tablecloths, informal flower arrangements in crayola primary and secondary colors, and (as I recall) colorful paper lanterns.

wonderful!! thank you again so much!!

We might be having it in my F!!MIL''s back yard (beautiful landscape) so these ideas are really helping!!!

Wooo hooo! Glad to see Jcar here!

I think BBQ weddings are adorable, and if the weather didn''t do so much damage to my hair, I would have seriously considered one.

I''m excited to see what you come up with!

JCAR!!! Ok ummm TOOOOTTTAALLLYYY missed your thread on getting engaged!

lol CONGRATS BABE!

Onto the colors....greens are awesome for outside. Something like this pic....

Also, if I may, I suggest Karen Bussen's "Simple Stunning Weddings" If I recall she has some "outdoor" options. Also, she just came out with a new book "Simple Stunning Home Parties" that may be a great options as well.

I''m having a backyard wedding too! We are having a black and white wedding with shades of green to keep it summery.

I love the idea of lanterns but didn''t want to spend a load of money. We are having a very large tent for the tables/chairs, dancing, and food coverage. I plan to make these cute Martha Stewart pom poms in shades of green for the tent instead. I''ll just hang them from the top!

Just another idea :)

Any colors that you love will work!

NakedFinger: OMG those striped tablecloths are to die for!!!!!!! i love stripes....how pretty is that outdoor wedding!!!!!!

This is exactly the wedding that came to mind when I read your post. It was lovely. The link that lucyandrodger posted was absolutely stunning as well, I can''t believe they did all that for $4k!

I think the best backyard weddings are those totally inspired by nature.

1. Depending on the time of year you get married, and where you live...you could let nature dictate your colors.

2. When we were working with our decorator for our kitchen, she asked us for "inspiration"...we said we wanted our kitchen to be "organic" feeling. We both love Granny Smith apples...so she brought one and cut it open. Inside was this wonderful display of colors...green, cream, chocolate brown seeds. We let that dictate our color scheme. And it worked. I again saw this method on some HGTV show...the designer on the show explained that Mother Nature doesn''t make design mistakes. So...the point: What is your favorite fruit? Cut it open, and let the colors be your guide. You can incorporate the actual fruit into your design.

I like the idea of a "sophisticated BBQ," with navy, white, and some yellow or green thrown in. If you are near water, subtle nautical-themed accents might be fun.

Thank you again everyone!

thanks for this awesome tip! funny enough, granny smiths were my fac growing up, and now i am partial to pomegrantes and star fruits.

I am having a backyard bbq wedding too! (i am really loving that they seem to be ''so right now!'')

I am not having a specific colour theme, rather working with a bali /asian style of paper lanterns, candles etc. I am letting my garden do the talking with the colours and flowers we are having, it''s full of frangipanis, bamboo, palms, birds of paradise etc.

I love the wedding from thisyounghouse, i have been looking at it all week and have managed to pull quite a few ideas from that wedding.

I like blue and white checkers better than red and white (at least for a wedding) with some bright yellow flowers. Also, things like daisies and sunflowers look more picnic-y I think; closer to wildflowers.
