I bought a blue spinel which is small but looks very nice and is well-cut. I do not know about grey modifier, either it has none or it doesn't bother me. The only way you can see something grey-ish is my orange lamp but nothing looks nice under my orange lamp. It changes color and looks like a lightly colored sapphire. People at my office liked it. Too bad it is so small - around 6 mm? I shall post pics but I am afraid of spoiling the impression with my orange lamp.

Bottom line: even if there are grey modifiers, they do not bother me. Brown is a different thing. Brown modifiers in garnets are a no-no for me.

I guess I have to buy several more spinels of different colors for a pendant or a brooch.

Please post photos of your new spinel!!!

Here you are...

Both of these are taken in the evening light because the package arrived after 4 pm. It shows distinct violet shift in low light. I shall try tomorrow at daytime.

More pictures please! So it shifts from blue to violet?

Waiting for (some!) sun. Yes, it does - slighty. It is best in evening light, or low light. Gray-ish in the shade. I yet have to see how it looks in the sun but since most of my day is spent indoors and I do not wear much jewelry in Hawaii (and anyhow I prefer Northern countries for travels), so it works fine for me. But morning shade is probably the worst time for this ring. I plan to buy several spinels of different color and shape (I saw several on a certain website) and make a brooch or a pendant from them - I saw a very nice one in a jewelry book, and it inspired me. Spinel is a very bright, clear and heart-warming stone.

Hi crasu, I have the same color situation in my spinel (avatar at right) from Gene Flanigan/set by JKT.

It does the same color shift you describe from day to night and during the day can have a kind of greasy (that sounds bad but it is still pretty) quality. In direct sunlight is a firebomb and I love it!

But it set me back a bit at first, getting used to the color shift, and I toyed with the idea of sending it back but wound up falling in love with it anyway and having it set.

Give it the time that Dan allows for returns and see if you fall in love too :-)

Oh, I like it very much. As I said, I am an evening person and the cut is gorgeous and I like the evening colors.

Enjoy your new spinel Crasru. Many of them look better in incandescent lighting. It took me a while, and some luck to find a blue spinel that looks good in both daylight and incandescent lighting.

Lovely, soft color. We definitely need some more photos here!

It''s very pretty, I hope you post more pictures. :)

I love it....please post more photos!!!

Lori

The body colour looks quite good in your last picture. You MUST attempt to take more pictures.
