First time buyer that has really no idea what he's doing!

I'm starting to plan for an engagement ring and I am at a total loss. I initially set my budget around 12K but looking now that just won't happen and I've bumped it up to 14 since my GF's finger are not small, anything 1.5C or smaller looks absolutely tiny on her size 11.5 finger. I've checked Brian Gavin and Ross Simons for inventory and was wondering if anyone else had any suggestions. My budget and requirements won't allow for a flawless diamond and I know that, just trying to get something in the size range I need that is decent.

Much appreciated

Hi aggunner and welcome!

I am glad you posted to ask for assistance, being at a loss is never a good feeling, let's see what we can do to help you out! Is your 14 k( v. nice budget BTW) just for the stone or does it need to cover the setting also please?

Just posting a few selections for you at different price points, see if you like any of them and there are some more if none of these suit.

This diamond is 12k ( might be less with bank wire) and 1.7 cts, I colour and SI2 clarity, it is cut to very high standards, check with the vendor that this diamond is eye clean to your specifications if interested.

Hi OP and GM Lorelei! Great suggestions for stones. I was thinking as I was reading your post that the setting design could be bolder and heavier to balance things out a bit and you could go for a slightly smaller stone (7mm range). For instance, a stylish bezel design or cool tension set or a 3 stone ring to give more finger coverage. Do you know if she likes modern styles, traditional, antique?

Totally agree with this! Halo, three stone (pear sides are great), or an antique style setting will give tons of presence.

'Mornin' Luvda and that's an excellent suggestion with the halo! And merci Madame! :halo:

Here are just a few options of already-made rings, which would provide SUBSTANTIAL finger coverage:

1.02ct Fancy Vivid Yellow SI1 Cushion Cut GIA Three Stone Halo Ring

1.31ct Three Branded DBL Old Mine Stones 2.54 ct total
(this one would be my pick)

1.73ct Pear Shape S-T SI1 GIA Three Stone Ring colorless sides

thank you all for the ideas. She is more into the traditional bands but the kicker is that she wears a 10.5 ring. Her fingers retain water and are big compared to her hands.

Re: First time buyer that has really no idea what he's doing

Does she want a round diamond. If you need finger coverage an Oval, pear or marquise will give you a LOT larger diamond (spread) for the money.

^ Good idea. You will just need to get ASET images check the performance because there is no tool like the HCA and no "cheat sheet" for the fancy shapes. They are more individual and less standardized than the rounds. Cushions are that way, too, but they face up small for their weight due to the depth of them.

Fancy shapes could definitely be an option to maximize finger coverage but do make absolutely sure she would like a fancy shape and if so, which shape, they aren't for everyone.

Re: First time buyer that has really no idea what he's doing

Also remember that an oval, marquise etc will be much more flattering to finger.

Re: First time buyer that has really no idea what he's doing

I'm about 95% sure she won't like an oval. Hell even I don't like it and I'm buying it

that's a very good option right there. It'll let me put more money towards the wedding band. Man women sure have it made when it comes to wedding and engagement jewelry. Maybe I should ask for a Rolex instead of a wedding band...

thank you all again for the help
