Hopefully my picture will be attached, I bought this setting and now I am concerned about how setting a stone in it will work. Has anyone ever seen a setting like this before? How can a diamond be set in this? I just don''t get it!

What about it don''t you get? The corners are like prongs, and the round diamond just sits below them.

But they're smooth inside, you see what I mean?

Will the corners come to points?

I''m not a jeweller but I''m pretty sure they start off with all that "material" and then they work it to fit the stone (they''ll sort of notch the prongs to fit snugly against the stone to hold it in place)

Experts might say it better....... not familiar with all the lingo......

Nope, sorry I''m not sure I understand what you mean...The top part (the fishtail) will just basically sit on top of the diamond like a claw. They probably will be the same shape you see them as in the picture, just a part of it will be covering the edges of the stone.

Could you ask the vendor for an example?

Groves are cut out of the inside of the prongs and the diamond sits inside of them, just like other prong designs. I love those prongs by the way!!

Huh, that is kinda unusual looking: I think it will depend on what you and your jeweler decide on. It doesn''t look like a typical fishtail setting to me, but I''d guess that it could/should be shaped into the typical triple-claws (or, alternately, if you prefer, left in the shape it''s in once the setting "notch" is grooved). The picture of the outer profile suggests that''s what''s intended. It''s the little bead on the corner that''s intriguing me - that should make for a nice detail!

Re: the bead; perhaps its meant to look more like this once the stone is set?

Suchende,

I'm quite familiar with this setting (or something very similar to it).
Your ring will be beautiful, have no fear.

The antique "fishtail", is the kind of timeless creation that suits a preference for a round stone, while sporting a "squarish" look and feel to the finished e-ring.
I hope you will get a feeling for your finished product based upon the image I have attached.

Best of luck with this!

That's very pretty. It is kind of hard to imagine how they get the diamond underneath the claws without messing them up. I hope you come back and show us when it's done!

Just got the ring back. I am a HORRIBLE PSer in that I don''t even own a digital camera, but I will tell you what happened...

The jeweler I brought it to said that the ring had "microscopic notches" that were supposed to hold the girdle, but that he did not trust them. He added little pieces of gold to the prongs that look a bit like claws... or maybe more like arrows. Either way, I am thrilled! I have fallen in love with knife-edge shanks.

What!!!! No pictures? Sacrilegious!

I knew I would get raked over the coals for this, lol... Maybe instead of another piece of jewelry I should ask for a camera for Valentine''s Day

No need to get hubby to buy one in place of a sparkly; men love cameras so just gently drop hints and he''ll buy one for himself that you can use.

good thinking, Chrono! you should mentor me :D

I''ve learned from the best here. Shhh...I did this with hubby too.
