Flat/Cloudy Diamond - Need Help Picking a New One

Hello -

I'm currently considering upgrading my diamond. I don't necessarily want a larger stone, but my stone often looks flat or cloudy in certain lights. I'm trying to figure out what my issue is with this diamond so I can avoid it in the future.

I've thought that the issue is probably the medium blue flour, but some articles seem to suggest that is unlikely. Is it an issue with the cut? Maybe both?

GIA stats and a few pictures are attached. Thank you so much!IMG_1443 2.JPGIMG_2583.JPGIMG_3700.JPGIMG_3698.JPGIMG_4585.JPG

I doubt its the fluor causing an issue, especially given that it's not D-F with "strong" fluor, which is usually the only time to potentially worry about it (and even then it's rare). Do you have other pics, or can you take pics with the stone at the bottom of a paper towel roll so we can see areas of potential leakage? Essentially it would help to see if the 35/41 combo is causing leakage or not.

Sure I can take another picture. Can you describe what you mean? Just hold it at the bottom of a paper towel roll and then take a picture from the top through the roll?

Sorry if this is obvious. And thanks for the help!

haha sorry, that was probably confusing of me. Look at this thread: https://www.pricescope.com/communit...light-performance-diamond-photography.227610/

You don't have to do these exact things. You can often get a decent sense of performance by using an empty paper towel roll instead of the pastry piping tip (or you can roll paper into a "cone" shape. I hope that makes sense!

Did you run through HCA? Honestly the stats are not anything horrible by a long shot - some may criticize for the 41 degree PA but it’s not that far off. The ultimate test is what the diamond looks like in person, and you’ve provided many images and the diamond is very pretty. When I read your post I was anticipating super ugly photos and a report with horrible proportions and yours is just not that by any stretch. Have you given it a good cleaning... soak overnight in hot water and Dawn. Gently brush, then rinse.

PS. people also use empty toilet paper rolls (see the comments from the thread I posted above)

Thank you all. Here are some new photos.

I'll say that I don't mind the way it looks here. It's bothers me in other lower lights. It definitely can get a cloudy look.

Maybe I'm being too picky! But please let me know what you think!IMG_4599.JPGIMG_4597.JPG

I'm trying to figure out where the look you are describing as "cloudy" comes in. From the report it looks like a solid choice (although as said above 41 can be risky). But from what I can see (although obviously the pics aren't ever going to be perfect without a more strict set up) the stone looks good. Sometimes people dislike that well-cut diamonds go "dark" in direct sunlight but it doesn't sound like that's the issue here. Can I ask what you are comparing it to (e.g. what do you wish it looked like in low light vs what it looks like now)?

Thanks again. Sometimes it looks more like the attached here. These were taken in pretty low light so maybe that's normal? I feel like it sometimes looks like this in normal light as well.

I guess I just wish it looked bright and I could view the facets more clearly.

But again, I could just be being far too picky!

Whatever you are observing is normal. Actually, with a super ideal cut diamond, the appearance changes even more drastically depending on the lighting condition and angle.

ahhh I see what you are describing. As @flyingpig says below, this is very normal, even in very well cut diamonds. It's just what they do in lower lighting environments, especially at an angle.

Ok - Thank you so much everyone! Maybe I'll hit pause on the upgrade and think/investigate this more at a later date.

I really appreciate the input!

Have you had it professionally cleaned recently?
