Ella had posted this a while ago regarding "flipping."

If you have owned it for a short time and are selling for more than you paid, it is flipping.

If you are not sure, better to ask for permission from us rather than forgiveness in this situation.

So I am considering selling a stone to help pay for a band. I have NOT had this stone for a long time. I have had horrible luck in trying to find a damn band that goes with my rings. I have one on hold, but recently left my job and I don't have extra funds for it. :boohoo: I have a stone that I bought at intergem for less than what it is listed for on the sellers website. It is worth way more than I paid for it. SO I am asking for permission rather than forgiveness, because I don't want to break any rules.

I did NOT buy it with the intent of flipping, and I am not happy at all about selling it because I KNOW I will never find a stone like this for this price. I have never flipped any jewelry and have sold many things for WELL under what I paid for them. If this would be considered flipping, I will not link my sale here.

Just curious are you selling that beautiful Zircon?

A little bigger than I'm looking for but fabulous color. Would love to know what you are asking. :naughty:

Yes I stalk colored stones I just don't post there.

Yes. I haven't listed it yet because I'm still considering asking DH to buy me the band so I can keep it. I kind of think he might divorce me if I ask, but it's worth taking a chance.

Bah ha ha! But you make an exception for zircons and we're glad that you do :Up_to_something:

ETA: Soxfan: imo, you didn't buy it with any intent to flip, circumstances have changed in your personal life, and you were smart enough to buy it at a good price initially. I don't see as how this is flipping at all. Ella may say no, but until such time, post your beauty! Off to see if I can find photos of this lovely...

Curious why you didn't contact/email Mods directly if you truly wanted permission first?

You've already identified the stone and the related CS thread so at this point it is more like asking forgiveness than asking for permission, even without posting the requisite link to the for-sale listing. JMHO.

I hope for your sake you don't need to sell this gorgeous stone, and that your DH will be ok with you buying the band. But if you do decide to sell I think it'll go quick because it's amazing and HUGE! And I agree that I don't think it's "flipping", because you didnt buy with the intent to sell at all, much less sell for more, but obviously I dont make the rules ;)

Maybe it wasn't your intention, but that does seem what the situation is.
Bought it at a great deal
Selling less than two months later for more than you paid.

If I were you, I wouldn't advertise it on here. That doesn't stop you from posting it on DB or LT though!

I thought there was no pm option on PS? I didn't even know I could contact them privately.

Yeah, that was my point in posting here. I didn't want anyone to see it on DB and LT and accuse me of flipping the next time I listed something on Pre-loved. I remember a thread where someone tried to resell an antique asscher and that post was stuck in my head. That's why I posted my reason for selling. I wanted to be transparent.

NO biggie, though. I can see how it comes off that way. If I indeed need to sell it I will just post it on LT and not link here if it breaks any rules. Mods can delete this post if they deem necessary. :D

Breathtaking. I'd love it.

Yep... That's what you get for trying to play nice. LOL #hindsight [emoji12]

I don't consider it flipping, personally, because you bought it for yourself. But that may not be the official policy. You have no idea what it will sell for. It might sell for less than you bought it for. It is always good to list a higher asking price, because people always want to negotiate down. I will advise you to be sure any posts listing the price you bought it for be deleted, though, before you list it.

It is so great when you come along to mock people, msop04. Yes, before I was serious, now, not so much.

While it may technically be flipping by pure definition, I always thought the intent of the rule is to prevent members from buying with the intent of selling for more to other members...and denying other members from purchasing at the lower price. That price paid and amount of time owned are just some of the factors one might consider in determining intent.

You bought the stone at a gem show without intention of selling. Now you could use the funds. You typically sell items for less. So I personally don't think you would be violating the spirit of the community or intent of its rules (but I don't make the rules so this is just a guess).

IF you tried to mislead potential buyers by suggesting you paid less, that your selling price is something that couldn't be found elsewhere or compare it to stones that sell for a lot more while hiding that you paid less, then that might violate the spirit. But you are posting here in full disclosure.

My guess is most people post things for what they think they can comfortably sell it for depending on the desired speed, convenience, their comfort with the buyer and other factors. And we often don't know what the seller originally paid (or how long they've owned it) unless stated or posted somewhere. Realistically, items that aren't bargains, don't sell on LT unless rare or unique as most buyers are educated/savvy. So if intent is to sell quickly, I assume whatever you offered it at would be a good price (regardless of what you paid).

Hopefully you get to keep it after all this because it's gorgeous

I have no idea WTH you are talking about regarding "emoji" x3... I guess you don't either, as it's been deleted. Good call.

^ msop04, I guess you've never edited a post here on PS? Yeah, I was trying to mock you back but decided against it because your snark level is beyond me as, yes, you've proved again.

Yes... and yes. [emoji1330][emoji56]

We provided our definition of flipping and it's not worth everyone arguing about. Selling it for what you paid is not flipping, selling it for more when you've owned it a short period of time generally is.
