I was debating whether to make a whole new thread about this ring and tell a whole long story, but the CS forum has been slow anyways, so where's the harm. You can always scroll for the pictures.
This is a cautionary tale about how window shopping can result into the emptying of a bank account if one's not careful. It begins on LT where I was browsing the items people no longer wore when I saw NutellaKitty had posted about her current ongoing sale. So off I went to ogle her instagram and etsy.
For those of you who don't know, NutellaKitty only ships domestically within the US, and I live in Europe. I'm safe. I objectively cannot buy anything, right?
So here I am, happily browsing etsy when I come across this blue beauty. And I'm mesmerized.
On one hand, I'm a sucker for blues. On the other, this ring reminded me of Rfisher's sapphire in a floral OEC halo ring (this one), which is the only halo I've ever liked. I may not be able to buy it, but I can add it to my favourites for the purposes of future drooling all over my screen. We take what we can get, right?
A couple of minutes pass and out of the blue I receive a message from NutellaKitty with a polite thank you (apparently vendors on etsy get notified when their items get added to favourites?) and a short reminder she has a sale currently going on, in case I want to buy anything. To this I kindly reply that although I like her designs very much, I don't live in the US, so
She responds that she'll have to check with her shipping company, but she might just be able to ship a ring to me, on the other side of the world. Well okay then.
A bit of time passes. Anxiety levels rise. And finally, a plan is put in place. NutellaKitty says it's possible. I make the purchase, we settle the details about resizing, and the wait begins.
At this point I believed things would be fairly straightforward - resize, then ship, receive, be happy. As it turns out, during the resizing the tips of the petals got polished and rounded due to being too sharp and scratchy beforehand. This seemingly minor change altered the overall look a lot, at least to me. Even though the bench tried to repolish, there's only so much that can be done once the metal has been polished off. I tried to like it, I tried to be okay, I tried to convince myself it was just a minor change, but to no avail. Removing this tiny detail in the design took all the magic away.
This was the low point. I knew I'd regret the ring if I proceeded with the delivery. I knew I'd regret getting a refund after I'd been so close to having it. It was a lose-lose situation. In the end I figured I better just say something and see what options I have, fully anticipating it would be a choice between these two. After all, there's only so much that can be reasonably expected, especially when you're buying on sale.
To my great surprise, NutellaKitty said she could have the ring recast entirely, if I was willing to wait the extra time that would take. In my eyes a few additional weeks and the possibility of sharp petals drawing blood were a price worth paying for beauty (and I formally acknowledged so!). I agreed and my worries and anxiety immediately disappeared.
From this point on things happened a lot faster than initially estimated. The bench was ready with the recast in half the time, shipping only took a little over two weeks. I fully expected to receive the ring sometime at the end of the month, but instead it got delivered to me this afternoon. Yay!
Next, photos.
