I have a pearl & diamond necklace that came with an appraisal from American International Gemologists. It says that the retail replacement value for insurance purposes is $14,000.00.

If I tried to sell it, what should I ask for it?

Thank you.

Do a little leg work and googling, compare the necklace to other''s of like kind and quality. Size, shape, pearl type, length of necklace, etc. Don''t get bogged down in "letter grade", it''s too subjective.

Take into account the age of the piece and that it will need to be restrung.

Appraisals done for resale (rather than insurance replacement) will vary greatly depending on location. A necklace in Los Angelas will cost more than one of the same kind/quality that''s for sale in Shreveport, La. for example. So I wouldn''t put a whole lot of emphasis on what the appraisal says the retail value is.

Do your homework, and then you can best determine a price that''s acceptable for you.

hi natwhit.

the markup for pearl appraisals are nuts. i bought a sweet, but simple, pair of earrings for around $150 and the appraisal (done by the retailer), said they were valued at over $600. yeah - um - no. pearls are my birthstone, so i do have a number of pieces, and the markup is always crazy.

so i think the question isn''t how much your pearls are appraised for, but how much you paid for them. then it depends on the condition they''re in, demand for them/how many similar items might be for sale, who you sell them through, and so on and so on.

for myself tho, i wouldn''t expect more than about 50% what i paid for them, and that''s assuming they''re still in excellent condition.

The retail insurance value will always be more than what you pay for the piece because a valuer will take into account price increases for the gold and the dollar increase and maybe the rarity of the gemstone projected over a few years. (I am not a valuer but i think it''s 5 years??)

So, the insurance REPLACEMENT price is going to be more.

Re-sale is very different. You may get more at an auction house than you would from a re-sell dealer, but you would get your $$ straight away from a re-seller. They will probably try to bargain with you so it''s best to know exactly what you are selling first and have a price in mind.

You can also sell your piece for a price you want on consignment at some re-sellers.

It totally depends on what the pearls are, but a re-seller is not going to pay you more than what they can buy the same pearls for at wholesale today, even if they are Motos.

If you feel that they are worth $14,000, why not try to sell them yourself on ebay?
