Most of us do our homework and know a good peridot color (cut & clarity aside) from the average department store variety. Here is another to watch for: on a recent trip to Williamsburg, VA, I took some time to wander through an out of the way jewelry store in a small cluster of shops just off the interstate. Being a huge fan of tsavorite, and REALLY good peridot, naming a ''green'' or two, I spotted among a display of green stud earrings a particularly lovely pair. The display contained what looked to me like Arizona peridot (among the more common color types) of various sizes, and another I could not easily identify. I was told it was "rare green obsidian", inclusion free and approximately 5 X 7mm (ovals). I thanked her for showing them and decided to do a bit of research before I considered the $375. purchase. I had never known, nor had I heard of obsidian having a crystalline quality -- it is in appearance rather (so far as concerns the green) far more like an agate in appearance, completely opaque and commonly filled with striations of texture and color. After intense research I am satisfied there is no such legitimately known gemstone to the industry, and that the stones were quite likely -- based upon color and price -- fluorite. Unfortunately this wasn''t the only discrepancy I noted visiting this retailer. I wanted to share this to remind us to all be careful. Since it is very unlikely this jeweler could have as excuse being so uninformed, all I can say is there thankfully exist honest others to do business with -- still sadly a few trying to slip things by.

Yeh, I have had people call a stone this as well.. hmmmm....

I have also heard people call things "Cullocite"( a purple stone/rock), and another was Pespitide (a pink stone)

Don''t be so sure. There are an unfortunate number of jewelers out there who are gemological noobs and basically believe whatever their suppliers tell them.

True green obsidian exists, but it is not a gem material, as it''s a very muddy, washed out browish-green. "Green obsidian" of the sort you apparently saw, is almost always some kind of manufactured glass and has been floating around the lower end of the industry for years.

Hi Carole....welcome!

TOTALLY off topic, but I had to comment on your avatar. I''m a HUGE fan of dressage and used to dabble in it....never very well.

But my niece and her gelding are currently schooling Grand Prix!! It''s so thrilling..

Do you ride?

OK...back on topic: I love green stones, too.

Sorry to follow on steal -

Widget, your niece is schooling grand prix - wow! Totally intense. I just watched the world equestrian competition on TV. It was in Germany. The dressage they showed was out of this world.

I grew up riding hunters and jumpers in Maryland. Rode out here in Portola Valley for a while but haven''t been in ages.

Have any photos of your niece and her horse?? Love to see!

LOL....I hope I don''t get in trouble for going SO FAR off topic in this thread! (Sorry, Carole...)

Here''s an old picture of her showing him last year at Prix St. Georges. Actually, he''s now "outgrown" her, and it''s her trainer who is showing him GP. There''s even talk of trying to qualify him for the US Equestrian Team..

His (the horse''s) name is Buon Giorno.

PS: Oh, I CAN tie this into jewelry! In this picture, my niece is wearing a pair of G,I-1 studs I got her a couple of years ago from DBL...

Wow widget - maybe we do need a new thread here!

This is a big time horse. Gosh, exquisite. Warmblood? He''s a gelding you said? From this photo his neck is so developed he looks like a stallion.

What stable do they train out of?
