For My Color Gem Freaks: 10 Most Valuable/Beautiful

Thanks for the lists. I can't say I agree with them, but they're interesting.

that red diamond looks like a garnet... :errrr:

Thanks. I always like to go look at those kind of articles and photos.

I'm surprised bixbite isn't on the rare gemstone list. I'd also put hauyne on it...and maybe cuprian tourmaline...and alexandrite...the list goes on. Also not sure why black opal is on there. It's pretty, but not as valuable as some of the others on that list (as well as the ones I've mentioned).

Same here; I don’t agree with the list but still there’s some nice eye candy to look at and some not so. I don't want to sound ungrateful for your effort though, so a big thank you to Miss Debby.

Maybe because it's visually interesting to look at and the average jewelry buyer maybe has only seen white opals? That's my guess.

Oh no problem. I find lists often fun to read also because they obviously are so incomplete, you know?

I was also thinking the same thing about the red diamond. I was browsing a site the other day and they had some diamonds that I'm sure an afficionado would love and need to have in their collection, but to me, I couldn't imagine paying the price for such a small stone that basically resembles other non expensive gems. I'm thinking specifically of red diamonds, black diamonds, and opal diamonds. For that matter, it's obvious that the really pure colored diamonds are special - rare, saturated- but lots of times they look irradiated to me. I sorta like the mixed color diamonds- the chameleons, the yellowish greens, the peachy pinks, and so on.

Definitely agree! I've never heard of opal diamonds, time to google. I shy away from the primary colors because they look really juvenile to me, I don't know why. I love every shade of green, especially in diamonds. I also like the fact that a yellowish green diamond is cheaper than a green one  Give me a grayish yellow diamond that looks green too!

I am extremely fascinated by jeremejevite, and I don't know why. It's beautiful and yet unassuming.

BTW: Google is very unforthcoming on opal diamonds. Anyone have a link?

RE: Painite "Only 25 small crystals and only two faceted crystals have been discovered in the world."

eBay search results for Painite: 118

Sometimes Langerman diamonds has the opal colored diamonds, but alas, none now.

Uranium is a very rare and valuable mineral, but I don't see it on the list. Platinum, iridium and rhodium are very very valuable, and not just to jewelery making, but in the scientific and technical fields. The most valuable (legal to buy) mineral on earth is probably red diamond. Some materials used in the fabrication of nuclear weapons are not legal to buy, but very valuable.

The fact of the matter is that these lists were made up by some group of people or person that really isn't too well informed.

It's also brown and to me, pretty ugly. Just because a gem is rare, doesn't make it desirable. You can buy two stones on the list, taeffite and jeremjevite, from Tan actually. I don't see the fascination with these gems, but they're rare. I prefer not only rare stones, but those that are beautiful as well.

I also suspect it is "blood uranium". Have you ever thought that someone has to mine it? Even if it is completely automated, think of the area... "Blood diamonds" are peanuts compared with it.

I also do not agree with the list. I want the Red Shield to go up for public auction! Watch the records break. Or... The Dresden Green  That is my pick for the most valuable gem. Or at least... in the top 5 lol!

They actually say the Hope would probably be the most expensive gem if it were ever put up for auction. However, like you, I prefer the Dresden green. The Red Shield would probably go to some rich Saudi royal, no doubt. They are big collectors of red diamonds.
