For smaller studs (80 ctw), what setting do you like best?

I really like the idea of these:

But will they overwhelm that size stone? Should I stick with a four prong basket? I'm definitely not interested in the basic 3 prong martini because the back comes to a point which seems uncomfortable.

Any feedback and/or pictures would be so helpful.

Can anyone help? Trying to make this decision ASAP.

I personally don't like 4 prongs. Not as secure & can sometimes make your stone look square, instead of round.

My wife's stone is 0.867 but sizes closer to a 0.90. She has 6 prongs on her setting. Claws are a little more refined from the WF martini ones shown on the WF site. We don't have issues.

My view would be that six prongs is too much for stones that are 0.4 each, and that it's a lot of metal for a smaller stone.

However, it's going to be up to you as to what you like aesthetically.

I think a three-prong martini would be workable on that size stone better. Perhaps you could ask them to tweak the back.

Otherwise, I would go for a four-prong setting.

I had my 0.63ctw set in a whiteflash 4 prong basket and loved it.
I would think 6 prongs on 0.8 ctw studs would be too much.

Here’s my .5 ct - set in a 4 prong setting. The prongs are delicate and tucked up onto the stones enough that they still look round. EABE72CE-6AC8-447F-B320-C48F85A3C556.jpeg

Excuse the busy pup. Lol

Congrats and sorry about my post earlier. My brain knows what CTW is but it registered as individual, lol. That’s what running on a few hours sleep does kiddos.

Another thought. Or maybe question (for WF). I would assume the claws are not a static size and rather adjust up/down for the appropriate carat weight. Six may still be too much for 0.40 but it makes sense they would adjust them within reason.

I know this isn't what you wanted and that you've also already made your decision, but I'm just adding these here because I think they're the most beautiful stud setting of all time. As for prong number, if they're scaled for size, 6 or even 8 would work just fine. But you need a very good bench to make sure the proportions are correct.

No worries! I appreciate your help on the diamonds. I figure I can always do a custom/more interesting setting when I know they are my forever studs, but I think I may want to eventually upgrade from these to .50/.55 each.

Those are very pretty.

Thanks so much! Went with the 4 prong baskets and the .403 (.80 ctw) H ACAs that were suggested yesterday. Really appreciate all the help. Hope I love them!

Yay, awesome! I was going to recommend the 4 prong baskets! I have a a couple of pairs near that size to give to my daughters and that's the setting I chose! I wouldn't spend more than that now, just in case someday you decide to upgrade them! But I still have 4 prong baskets for my pair of 1.6 ct stones!

I like 6 or 8 prongs on any round stone. I have 4 mm studs with 8 prongs and I don't think it's too many.

HI:

Helped my friend with a .82 ctw earrings (.41 x 2, H, IF, ACA's) from WF in Feb. She wanted a 6 prong setting that would "match" her Tiffany solitaire. 6 prong setting--and oh so beautiful IRL and not too much metal at all.

Enjoy your studs. No wrong answer here.

cheers--Sharon

Where was the setting from, can I ask? Or was it custom?

I agree with @mrs-b and @canuk-gal that 6 prongs or even 8, if well done, work with stones your size. I wouldn’t let the size of the stones determine how many prongs. If you like a four prong basket get that but if you prefer a six or eight prong setting those would work in my opinion. However if you do think you’re going to upgrade I would not put more than needed into the cost of the setting as you will probably have to upgrade your settings in size if you upgrade your stones. So for me if upgrading in the future, the price of the setting would play into my decision of what to choose now.

Yes, this is my thought. I’m thinking I might want to do one upgrade to get to 1ctw or just above it since that’s what I originally wanted. So, I can always put more thought into the setting for those.
