four rings later I lose the diamond

I am posting this message from the UK.. Any help on this is much appreciated.

Since getting my (platinum and brilliant cut diamond) engagement ring (two years ago), I have had the ring replaced three times (wedding ring twice) because it either totally bends out of shape (on accassion making my finger go red) or the side that holds the diamond breaks off from the rest of the ring. To prevent this problem, my jewellers have increasingly made the platinum ring thicker and molded the diamond setting into the actual ring. They are at a loss to understand why it bends this way and say they have not had this before. Then, a few weeks ago I got the diamond setting tightened a as I noticed it was loose (my jeweller said the diamond would never fall out!!). However, after going to see a band the other night, I came home to find that the diamond on my invincible ring had fallen out (the spokes holding it in were bent backwards) and the side had broken away from the rest of the ring.

I am hoping insurance will pay out - but I would like any advice or knowledge on this. I am concerned (and almost resigned) that I cannot wear a diamond ring (my wedding ring was fine and not bent after this concert). I have thought of silver/white gold or some other metal before, but my jeweller said this was not as strong.

Wow, I don't know that I've ever heard of this happening where the ring kept breaking apart.

It sounds like your ring self-destructed until the diamond finally blew out of it. How odd!

As for your finger turning red, I think it's unusual for people to have reactions like that to platinum. Are you sure they were using platinum when they repaired it, not white gold? Some people have a reaction to the nickel in white gold.

I think the "going red" is from having her circulation cut off, or at least that was what I gleaned.

Perhaps you want to go with a sturdy bezel-setting the next time around?

WOW, I feel bad for you. I cannot understand why it fell apart like that in the first place. That particular jeweler should have checked those prongs when you thought it felt loose to begin with.
I would probably never have them do anything else for you again.

Let us know if your insurance covers the loss of your diamond.

Are you very rough on your hands - what type of job do you do? Was this an independent jeweller of a jewellery chain? I remember a vendor once said you should not do anything with your rings on that you would not do with your best dress on. Have you noticed if any rings you have worn in the past have been torn or bent out of shape?

Yes, you are right, my finger went red cause my circulation was cut off!! We had to get a hammer to shape it so as I could get my ring off!

I am not you would call the sporty or 'hands on' type. Yoga and swimming are my limits. Also, the ring seems to bend out of shape and break when I am at weddings or out on the town seeing bands or going clubbing (i.e. I think it may be something to do with my temperature and getting hot - but this seems a bit severe).

I am pretty sure my jewellers are good quality. They have never seen this before and are also baffled. They have made me three or four different rings to try and sort out the problem. Although I have not yet told them about the diamond!!

There are two things I can think of:

#1: the ring was too small (not much, but a size is enough to cause disconfort)

#2: there may be some technical issues involved. Is the jeweler working routinely with platinum? I would expect such things to happen when one tries plat for the first time after a glorious career of working gold. What you describe soudns like inappropriate soldering and annealing to me. However, this is hobby for me, not job as it is for your jeweler - so he may just have got out of luck with this one.

Perhaps try one of the vendors on here? Maybe they can do something different than the other jeweler you are seeing can.
