So, I went with DH to Tiffany's on Fifth today and tried on the following rings:

Three-carat flawless Alexandrite solitaire
Three-carat square Emerald with small diamond trillions (also flawless, and the emerald was such a deep green--perfectly lush)

Such a ring is the sort of thing I have in mind for our 10th wedding anniversary (in four years). My question is this:

How easy are top-notch Alexandrites to source? I'd never even heard of the stone before but fell completely in love.
How included can one safely go with an emerald? The stone at Tiffany's was flawless, but I'm just curious.

Meantime, I think a pink sapphire or a tsavorite will make a nice interim gift. Sooo much cheaper!

Alexandrite is rare and one of the more durable gemstones. I''d be very curious what the price was on a 3 ct. one from Tiffany. Did you see the color change?

I didn''t because we didn''t go near sunlight. It was the most stunning purple under the store lights. As for the price, it was $50k. The emerald was $105k, which made DH lose his footing for a minute or two

The budget will be closer to the cost of the Alexandrite.
