Several years ago I bought this 10mm garnet from a PSer who had bought it from the cutter but decided not to set it. You can find it somewhere here in an old thread where people posted pictures of the rough before cutting and pictures of the end result. I have just never gotten around to setting it because I wasn't sure what to do with it. My new jeweler had this 18 ct YG ballerina/bypass setting lying around and said he could make it fit my garnet. He had to spread it out a little and put a new basket in it to lower the stone down to finger level so it wouldn't stick up so high. Ordinarily I like symmetry in my rings, so this is a real departure from my usual style and has taken me out of my comfort zone.
This is obviously an 80s style setting and not particularly stylish today, but it was so blingy and I sorta liked it. You are under no obligation to say that you like it too. I know you're lying!! I told the jeweler that my daughters would definitely not want to inherit it, but he said that my granddaughter might. Styles like this must make a comeback a generation or two later. ha!
The open basket lets a lot of light into the stone so it doesn't black out, and the yellow gold complements the red stone and frames the diamonds nicely. They're very sparkly too. There are 20 baguettes and 26 RB side diamonds. I'm calling it my Night at the Opera (or Ballet) ring. It's the style ring that old ladies wear to the symphony.
Ignore my dining room table. I'm using it as a wrapping station for Xmas presents.
