I am just getting into the jewelry business and I have some questions about gemstones and their quality. Natural, I get is mined and what most people think of when it comes to gemstones. Other than that it gets somewhat shady. From what i understand manmade is the exact same composition as natural, but lab created thus reducing price and keeping quality the same or possibly increasing it (less flaws). Cubic zirconia is a natural replacement for many gemstones (diamonds usualy) and is much cheaper than the real thing. So that leaves synthetic or simulated. The best i can guess is these are either dyed cz or glass or somethign like that. Also what range do Swarovski gemstones fall into, and how should gemstones fall in price ranges based on their make? please tell me if my assumptions are right or wrong, and if there is anything else a beginer should know.

You have a lot to learn :}

dont dismiss synthetics or cz they serve a purpase in the market and fill a need.
I love em :}

That said this forum is for natural gemstones only :{
So thats all I can say.

You might benefit greatly from taking the GIA courses which lead to the Graduate Gemologist Diploma...www.gia.edu. This will give you the basis for understanding many aspects of gemology, and along with your experience along the way after several years you will see the benefit.

You can do this diploma by distance education combined with on-site extension courses...it's lots of fun!

Good luck!

perhaps I should clarify. When I said I was just getting in to jewelry making, I meant small time things like Wire jewelry and the like. I have limited knowledge in metalurgy and would like to get into casting eventualy though. My question was more or less just to get a feel of how to work my way up in time. As of now i can only afford CZ and synthetic for the most part. I am only 17 and already own a magic and entertainment business i have built up, i was looking to jewelry for another avenue to increase revenue.
