I have a "spare" 1/3ct diamond that I want to do something with. It''s a warmer color, probably L or M maybe, and is mostly eye clean. I was thinking of making a small 3 stone ring with the diamond in the center, so what gemstone sides would look good with a warm diamond? The diamond is just under 4.5mm, so the sides would be pretty small, about 3-4mm. And, the harder part, where do I find small matched gemstones?

Thanks!

This depends on the effect you are after. If you want to highlight the warmness, go for warm coloured stones like red and orange stones. If you want it to appear cooler, then blues or something in that colour pallette. Green stones can go either way.

I would say the first thing you need to decide is the colour and gemstone type. This will then lend itself to which vendor you'll approach.

I think I''d like to highlight the color, so maybe rubies or orangey garnets? What other stones come in warm colors?

Sourcing the stones shouldn''t be too hard as you just need to find a pair made for earrings (maybe even buy some earrings, take the stones out and use them). But their size might make a bit of a problem, since 3-4 mm is pretty small when it comes to colored stones. I''d suggest some of the pastel colored varieties, so that they don''t make too harsh of a contrast to the center stone (unless that''s what you''re after). My first pick would be zircons, which not only come in sizes small enough, but are actually very brilliant, and a good match for a diamond. They''re available in lighter shades too (especially yellow). I''d also consider fancy sapphires, minty tsavorites, mali garnets and pink or lilac spinels. What metal are you considering for a setting?

P. S. Zircons are not the most durable of stones (known to chip if hit), but they''re really inexpensive in these sizes and small size itself makes it harder to damage the stone.

Good suggestions mr ma re. Honey zircon might be yummy with the tinted diamond. Which dealer would you reccommend for 3-4mm zircons?

You may want to consider Mali garnets as well. I picked up a pair at Intergem of approx 3.5mm from a dealer called FGSGems. He had a ton with him but I imagine most any of the Pricescope dealers could get them for you. Art Cut Gems would be a good place to start.

Second the Mali garnets. I think spessartites would look great and also orangey pink Malaya garnets.

How about peachy garnets ( malaya ) for the side stones or pinkish purple rhodolite? Or maybe chocolate colored diamonds?

Multicolour.com also has a ton of smaller mali garnets.
