Genuine Victorian or reproduction emerald ring?

Hi all, would love your opinion on a ring I saw online. Real Victorian piece or reproduction?

I think the molding is not as clear as what I’ve seen in real life on true Victorian pieces, which makes me think this may be a reproduction ring made from casting/crude finishing.

No hallmarks except 18k which looks like it was hand inscribed/engraved, not stamped.

On the other hand I do like the color of the stones—they don’t look obviously as emerald doublets. Could be paste (given lack of inclusions, uniformity of color). I guess they “could” be non-ideal color emeralds if I’m feeling very lucky lol. Although true Victorian Jewelry used plenty of paste and doublets too.

How much is a fair price that you’d be willing to risk on it? I’m tempted to take a chance...but I prefer true antique pieces, not reproductions, and would be less tempted to take a chance if the consensus is that this may be a reproduction.

Oops sorry wrong forum!! Moving it to antique and vintage now

I believe it is a reproduction. The quality of the mount is not very good, and these rings are not very difficult to find as original antiques. Usually they will be set with at least some diamonds, though. Good luck!

@PreRaphaelite I was hoping you would weigh in, since I know you have a lot of experience with antique pieces. Thanks! I figured as much; something about it seemed off to me too.

That’s very kind, thank you.

Did you have a particular attachment to the mounting style, or to emeralds?

I’m drawn to both antique (and antique style) rings and emeralds, although hoping to save up for a bigger center emerald stone type of ring some day!

Here’s my dream ring sold online for almost $6000 a few months ago:

Unfortunately I only have about 1/2 of the budget right now so looking for something with emeralds for $3k max. I just posted another emerald ring in the colored stone section and would love your expertise!

PS love Marjorie—I think you have one of the best collections with carefully chosen, romantic pieces with history. I’m a sucker for the pearl and diamond combo too!

Oh, thank you, what a lovely thing to say. I’ve been lucky to find a few things here and there :) and Marjorie is my true love.

I’ll check out your other thread, but in the meantime please keep this one open and I’ll start looking for some rings for you and link them. No promises, but anything I find will show up here.

@PreRaphaelite It’s gorgeous, thank you!! Reaching out to them now. Will keep you posted.

I saw your first post and wanted to chime in although it now seems you have moved on. My ring below is similar to the one you posted, but from ca 1930 (maybe earlier).
Not sure, maybe helpful, maybe not.
I paid ca 650 USD for mine, diamonds...
Other similar rings I have seen, one gorgeous with turqouise, were all set with tiny diamonds nestled by the prongs (like my ring, pictured)

Absolutely gorgeous!

@acaw2015 Thanks for sharing—yours is lovely and yes, helpful for me in that I see much finer modeling and handiwork in your ring than the reproductions. Great price also!!
