Let''s be honest. You can''t all be making 6 figures and own beach resorts. How do you do it? I am self-sufficient, have a great job, support myself and my daughter and still barely have the money to take holidays every year that don''t involve a stick and a wienie roast if you know what I mean.

yes..you do see some magnificent pics on this forum..all always drewl worthy! but not all of us can afford the biggest stones..and thats okay. my husband and i are noo where near the rich and famous and will never be.. :) but thats okay..and we save..then buy..then save.. at least he saves..hes the word of reason around the house. hehe..if it were just me...id have new blingage every week, so im actually thankful.
dont get me wrong..i get jealous looking at all the huge and beautiful bling bling, but somehow it makes me happy knowing someone gets to enjoy it all! hahaha.. :)

Honestly, I just told my FH that I had found my dream stone, and showed him how much less we could get it for on the internet (I showed him how he could get a 1.5 ct round in the B&M stores around here for $20,000-25,000 or get my dream ring). Also, he knew it was important to me to have a stone I would never feel the need to trade up, and liked that I''m so sentimental. Finally, the fact that we live in an area that is full of women with 5+ ct stones from Cartier and Tiffany''s, I think he was just glad I wasn''t asking for one of those!

I told my fiance jokingly that I wanted a 2ct ring the first time we talked about marriage, and he said no. But then I think that gave him an idea of what to save for. Plus I told him later that I just want something over .5ct. That gave him a range to choose from. He knows that he has to get a 2ct or bigger on or before our 5th anniversary (I guess I have to wait 6 years - hehe)

Girl!!!

I don''t know! lol How many times have I sat around with my friends talking about this. So I''m gonna break it down for ya! "IT''S CULTURAL" well at least that''s what the friends and I think. If you come from a background where everyone has big rocks, friends, family, co-workers, you will most likely get a big rock too. And don''t believe the hype that everyone has the money, some folks will go to great lengths to keep up with the joneses. I know a guy who sold his car to get his girlfriend a ring. And just recently a pricescoper''s boyfriend saved for 5 years!!!! If you come from a place where everybody is scrimping and saving to make ends meet all their lives and you walk in with the rock of gibraltar not everyone is going to be happy for you. These folks can''t begin to understand why anybody would spend upwards of $10,000 to $30,000 on a piece of carbon (and I''m being modest). I was raised to think that you can have whatever you set your mind too, and I believe that if you want something get if for yourself. I love my man, but if he truly can''t afford the bling, I have no problem doing it for myself. There are other more important things to consider.

Thank you for the candid response. That is exactly how I feel. I want, but could never afford. The "Jones''" here means 1 carat or higher. Never have I ever even seen a diamond over 2 carats in real life. Maybe on a movie star. But...even if I could afford JLo''s ring I would never want that gaudy thing on my finger. Did she think that looks good? Maybe she thinks she''s Dame Edna or something???

I swear they should make an "I'm crackin up" happy face I guess this one will have to do
1.gif
Well JLo is Dame Edna and Queen Edna and Lady Edna, etc. etc. and if you had her bucks to throw around you would be too! LOL But JLo doesn't count marriage is a farce to her, she's the latin Liz Taylor rocks included.

Well I've seen the big and the small and I must admit I favor the big!! Would I want to spend $30,000 on it, nope. But if $30,000 was like $30.00 (money being no object) I most deffinately would! and put another $30.00 on that and I would get a tennis bracelet too. LOL

Some of the best vacations I have ever had were in the woods, filthy, with my extended family and friends, roasting wienies and marshmellows.

I want to say theses ladies are lucky, but that''s not it. They have husbands or fiances who adore them, deservingly, and if they want jewelry, then jewelry they get. I had the choice of a large diamond or a very nice horse for my 20th, and I chose the horse.

Two years later, he told me to get out there and buy a ring.

Sometimes I guess we just have to wait. Actually, until I found PS, I didn''t even know what jewellry lust was. Now I''m trapped. I''m reading and learning and am considering a jewlery making class. I''m buying cheap stones on ebay because I like their color, even though I''ve never even looked at ebay in my life!

I agree with Suzanne. I''ve always liked jewelry but my hub thinks it''s a waste of money. I can''t say much since he doesn''t have any expensive hobbies either. But about 3 years before our 25th, I started priming him that I wanted a bigger diamond and since I didn''t think he would get me one and even if he did, I didn''t want him picking it out, I went out and bought it myself. That was 13 years ago and before I ever heard of PS or scopes or sarins or anything like that. I bought myself a 3.01 princess cut that I''m sure is not the very best quality but I still love it and it sparkles plenty for me. I guess the only thing I would change if I could do it again would be to get a little higher color. But I think that I must (by accident I can assure you) have gotten a good cut since when it was mounted on my greatgrandmother''s 8mm 18K wedding band, it looks pretty white. I''ve bought other jewelry for myself too since then and had several pieces made. He still complains about how much such ''fluff'' (to him) costs but I secretly think that after it''s all said and done, he''s proud of me wearing it. And while mine might not be quite as grand as what some of the young girls have here on this sight, I''m thrilled for them and love to see it. Like Suzanne has said, HELLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!! It just goes to prove that you don''t have to be a young bride to be to love all that bling!

Hi,

I went shopping with my FH for the ring and so he knew what style I liked and that I would rather have a smaller and whiter stone than anything below a G.

I also told him that I love him for him and I don''t need a ring to prove it cause I work and I can buy my own diamonds and I did. I got a lovely brilliant cut diamond ring with pave set diaomds on the band to sized to be worn as a dress ring on my middle fingers of either hand.

His male pride then kicked in and he got me a ring to outdo it which while not completely important who''s complaining?

Though I love to check in daily (several times a day) to see what new sparklies there may be, I don''t think about my having them or who can afford them. Everyone has their own budgets and different life styles. The rings and diamonds on PS are truly extraordinary and I drool just about everytime I''m on. What started out as "getting educated" regarding diamonds, turned out to be an enjoyable pastime. Also, I love to hear the engagement and anniversary stories. It seems like (big or small) these diamond rings mean more than just a carat size to the ladies. Most of the time there is very special man that wants to share the rest of his life with them. Spending your life with that special someone...now that''s awesome whether you''re wearing .25 ct or 3 ct. I am not one of the ladies with a large diamond, but my .90 ct is just as special and beautiful to me as a 3 ct. I know that my now hubbie wanted me to have a truly special ring that I would love forever (and I do). And for those ladies that are treated or treat themselves with a whopper of a ring, then "YOU GO GIRL". Seems to me that the spirit of PS is a bunch of people who enjoy learning about diamonds, looking at diamonds, and sharing just a bit of their lives with other that they might never have met before. It''s a good place to laugh and learn a thing or two about diamonds and jewelry in general. Hope you enjoy PS as much as we all do.

P.S. I love a good wienie roast (as long as I''m with my hubbie and kids)

When DH and I got married ten years ago he had quit his job three months prior and had spent all of his savings to open a restaurant. We decided to reset a diamond that I already had from a previous engagement. He said that when he could afford it he would buy me a new one. Well, fast-forward 10 years and 6 restaurants later and now I have my "real" engagement ring.

Alma

I''ve been married for 5 years. When I first got married, I was young and didn''t think that i''d want a big diamond. So I picked out my engagement ring a .17 carat center stone that was very simple and matched it with a simple gold band. I think the total cost was less than $500. Fast forward a few years, my husband decides that I am the most wonderful woman in the world, wants to buy me a new ring (after several prong issues with the last one). At first, I started looking and saw all the bling and I thought, "I couldn''t possibly" but he uttered the words "whatever you want" so I started looking at EVERYTHING. I ended up deciding on a 1.5c with the most gorgeous setting I had ever seen so the total diamond weight of the setting and center stone is 3 carats. I have no idea how I convinced him to spend the $$$ because he is so thrifty, but he said it was out of love. Now..how can I get him to buy me the 1.6 carat matching wedding band??????

Sorry to be so blunt, but it may never happen.

I was engaged four years ago, when I was 23, and my husband bought me the most beautiful 1.3 ideal cut, E, VVS1 solitaire. He bought it dirt cheap through a friend for less than half price. Had that friend not been so generous, I would have ended up with whatever else he could have gotten for $4-5k -- what my husband thought was a very generous sum for an e-ring. Bearing in mind we live in NYC, and he''s a senior associate at a law firm, some would think that''s a meagre sum. In short, some men will never come around to the idea that baubles are worth shelling out for. Now extravagant vacations, that''s a different matter where my husband''s concerned!

I have to admit that my bf has been pretty receptive to buying me a nice ring from the get go--he understands that it''s important to me and I think that he feels that it''s a reflection on him as well (i.e. If he doesn''t get me a very nice ring, someone will mutter under their breath "I guess his job must not be going too well, huh?" or "Guess he doesn''t have great taste" or even "He must not care that much about her") Plus, I think that he can appreciate the beauty of diamonds and jewelry in general. But there is the occasional moment when we are looking or discussing diamonds when he''ll blurt out, "Isn''t it just ridiculous that people spend this amount of money for a rock? It''s like you''re wearing a car around your finger!" To which I calmly remind him that the $4000 Rolex that he just has to have is something that he''ll probably wear for a few years until he moves on to something else, when, in contrast, my ring is something that I will have for the rest of my life! That usually keeps him quiet

Yikes! Does that mean that I, with my one-carat, is appreciated less than the three-carat buyers my husband works with?

Love is expressed in many different ways. Sure, I would love to be surprised with a four-carat asscher one morning, but I don''t think it''s going to happen. Instead, I guess I''ll have to be content with breakfast-in-bed and shoulder rubs

Unfortunately I live in an area where people can be superficial and bigger is always better, in every aspect....unfortunately,the whispers happen (believe me, I''ve heard it all.) Does that mean that those people are correct? Absolutely not! And I''d like to say that it''s easy to rise above it all and just say "i don''t care at all what those people think", and I think that, for the most part, my bf and I do (believe me, what we are spending is probably 1/3 of what most people we know spent and we feel that it''s PLENTY), but we''re human and it''s hard to rise above completely
emcrook.gif
emotion-5.gif
, especially knowing that your going to be judged. Luckily, most of the people that we are able to choose to be around don''t share these superficial values. It''s the people that we have no choice but to be around that make the judgments!! And I have to add that those were HIS comments and worries...not mine! BUT, I can say with complete confidence that I chose my ring based on my own preferences (I chose a solitaire and most women I know would die if they didn''t have humongo side diamonds!) and I love it! (well, I will love it when I get it
emsmilep.gif
) I certainly didn''t want to make it sound like I think that those comments above are true...am I digging myself into a deeper hole??? Help! Does anyone else know where I''m coming from???

Help! Does anyone else know where I''m coming from???
I know where you are coming from. It is human nature. Especially if you live in one of those towns where people equate largess with happiness or in the the case of diamonds, love.

I myself do believe that we choose our stones based somewhat on ego. If the diamond purchase wouldn''t be based somewhat on ego, then there wouldn''t be all these pscope topics on how to get the largest stone for my buck? or what will $$$ get me in terms of a rock........

We all have ego....for better or for worse...

psuheather, I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. I live in Manhattan and all of my husband''s friends bought their wives two carats or more. Being the guy he is, my hubbie does not give a stuff what other people think, and bought my ring based solely on the amount it glimmered (and boy, does it). Everyone''s different and isn''t that great?
19.gif

The most important thing is getting the ring that you love. People will always judge how matter how big the diamond is. Who knows, they can be saying other nasty things even when you have a big ring. I agree that it''s partly an ego thing when it comes to having the biggest diamond. Just tell your hubbies or fiances or bfs, it''s like a competitive sport. hehe. Also the perceptions of "big" depends on your surroundings. I didn''t grow up in an area where everyone have big diamond, so I think my diamond ring is relatively big (my ring have 1.28ct center stone and two .25 ct side stones). But now the area I work at, the women have plenty of bigger diamond and I think mines is not as big anymore. Anyways I still love my ring and still get compliments on it
emsmile.gif
. Of course, being a competitor, I want a bigger one when I get older. hehe

qtiekiki,

You are right. People will judge you no matter how big your rock is. Remember how Joan Rivers bashed Kevin Costner saying that he told his fiancee "put it in the sunlight, it''ll grow" or something like that. Rude! Anyways, some people will even judge you saying that your diamond is *too* big. Where I am from in the great white north of Canada, diamond rings are not huge. I would say that the biggest I have seen is probably .5 carats. My old ring was .17c and it was *pretty standard*. My husband is concerned that my new $**,*** ring will be too flashy, but like I told him.. it is my decision, and people can judge me and my 3 carat total weight ring all they want! LOL! I don''t mind! Im still me on the inside!!!

the truth is.... in our society, some (not all) people will always have something to say about others. That is part of human nature... not a pretty one i might add. Your intend can be pure and simple, but there will be someone out there that can turn it around and say something bad and meaningless about you (or your "bling"). All i can say is... be happy with what you have and enjoy it regardless what others have to say about it. It''s YOUR rock...!!!

Competitiveness or is it more just the insatiable love of all that scintillations and sparkles?
30.gif
It is kind of like your eyes just get used the twinkles of your currrent diamond; and over time, you will want a bigger diamond for the bigger flashes to get the same satisfaction. How often do you look at your ring and think that it is big enough? Then at the same time you are thinking that if you have a bigger diamond, you can see the scintillation and flashes much easier.
