I''ve posted on here before about inheriting my grandmother''s engagement ring. It''s beautiful, I love it, and it sparkles like mad. I was thinking about getting it appraised - is this helpful for any reason?

I don''t know anything about it except that she bought it with her own money. I don''t care how much it''s worth, and though I''m curious about the specs, it''s not something I feel that I absolutely need to know.

And does it cost a lot to get something appraised? I''m not hard-up for cash, but bf and I are saving for a house, so I''m trying to count my pennies and ask myself "Do I need this?" before purchasing.

Thanks!

If you''re planning to get the ring insured, you should get an appraisal.

Appraisal''s are necessary if you get it insured. They cost around $100.

Ditto! Well worth the cost of an appraisal to get a family heirloom such as yours insured. And I would give the same advice to anyone purchasing a new stone. Much better to spend a small sum on knowing exactly what the value of your stone is, and have it insured, than to lose it or have it stolen and have to replace it and spend far more.
