I bought an uncertified diamond that I am sending to GIA. When you all send in an antique diamond, would you elect to have the GIA report number inscribed on the girdle or no?

Wouldn't it depend on the girdle too? I've always wondered this because I have two big old cuts that could have been inscribed but they weren't. I mean saving costs is one thing but one has an extremely thin girdle and the other has a very thin girdle. Not sure if that makes any difference. Hope an expert would weigh in lol.

YES! this was also my concern!

I would. The inscription is microscopic, and even with thin girdles they are rarely consistent across the stone, so there is often a spot that is a bit wider where they could put it.

If you do a walk-in, I would imagine you could talk to intake about it. If you ship it, you could probably include a note on the memo.

OK, cool, thank you! Your instructions were perfect by the way! Very easy to navigate!

If I thought the stone was hard to identify and might get confused with other stones then maybe I would. Otherwise, I would
not.

I would, especially if it’s over 2 carats.

Do they need to polish/facet an area to remove the bruting or can it be inscribed over the bruting?

Mine looks like it had a few ‘cleaned up’ areas among the bruted girdle, and on one of those polished areas, part of the report number is inscripted.

I have four small OECs with lab reports and all have inscriptions on the girdles. They chose thicker areas and they did not facet the areas they inscribed, it’s right in the bruted surface @Rfisher

So yes, I’d have it done. There is no risk afaik and GIA is very expert at it. Although it isn’t strictly necessary for identification because our stones are so unique it does come in handy. Like if I send stones to a jeweler it’s easy ID.

maybe our stones will cross paths lol I have three half carat OECs at the CA location being graded right now!

Mine was just delivered to New York!! LOL!! I was nervous it might get delayed because of the snow here but it is showing on GIA portal as received!! It is a complete mystery what this is going to grade as so Im dying to see the results!

Thank you - you it has inclusions that i think make it very identifiable

I guess thats part of what i was worried about, if it somehow 'messes' with he antiqueness, LOL!

Just a little 4ct, no big deal.

Please tell us more. Pictures?

LOL! I am not really sure... hence the GIA!!!! I was going to do a post about it after i got the info back! So i can give the estimate from my purchase: 9.65x10.45x7.1, 4.37ct, OMC, M or N color SI.

I'm doing a 3 stone ring with it, so i am on the hunt for two 1.5 cts for the sides. I affectionately call it the "brass knuckles ring". I adore my lab halo, absolutely LOVE it. I dont have one regret about it.

That said I really missed : warmth, wonkiness, charm, imperfections. So this way I will have the best of both worlds! I like being able to switch it up.

Its far from perfect but i absolutely LOVE it. I love the pinwheel center so much!! So, I am sure by the numbers it sucks, but I just love it anyway! Its exactly what I was looking for, for a price i was willing to pay LOL

Look at that perfect pillow shape, those facets!!! She’s beautiful! What’s her name? Every pretty girl needs a name

I’m very curious to hear what she comes back as… not that it matters, she’s gonna steal the show regardless! As far as the inscription I would have it inscribed since she’s at GIA. Flora isn’t, I thought about sending her to have it done, but in the end, I decided against it cause I felt like a protect mama and wanted as few hands touching her as possible her

Should I be that way someday for something, maybe… but she’s home and never leaving my finger, and I’ve stared at her for hours so I could ID her across the room - so does it matter?

Probably not… probably better I put that money towards a band of some sort lol

Brass knuckles :P2

I'M DYING. I wasnt this impatient waiting to get it, or any other piece of jewelry EVER! I am totally dying to know what they say!

Honestly, there was a HUGE part of me that felt the same way, i LOVE this, I absolutely love it, I dont care what they say...so it really doesnt matter... but then the curiosity got the best of me!

Your so funny. She looks great! I am also very curious about how she comes back from GIA. I just got my three back and they came in right where I expected, better on clarity.

Where did you find her?

This feels like when I teenager shows me a picture of a tick too famous person and I have no clue who they are.

I think I found a video of your lovely ring but I won't tell anyone @Inked. :) It's so gorgeous!

Cayssie submitted my diamond to Carlsbad GiA on Tuesday and the results are back already. Hope yours are quick too!

Mine was super fast too, took like 4 days. BUT I suspect jewelers get expedited service bc they use it so much.
