I took my ring into be serviced for a missing diamond out of the setting and they couldn’t find the laser inscription for my center stone. They sent it out to have the prongs lifted and still can’t find the laser inscription :( What do I do? The inclusions seem to match the GIA report but is says it has an inscription but no one can find it. I beginning to wonder if it was swapped at some point. Do I send it to GIA? I’m so lost

Did they try blacking the girdle with a marker then lightly wiping it with rubbing alcohol?
That will leave the color in the numbers making them easier to find?
Are they using a microscope or a loupe?
Is the weight right compared to the report on a properly calibrated scale?
GIA can determine if it is the same diamond.

They sent it off to have the prongs lifted so they could rotate it and still didn’t find it. I contacted my insurance company and they are going to let me know how to proceed. This really sucks :( Anyone know how much it costs roughly to have GIA inspect it? Also do I have to have the diamond removed from the setting?

It is better to be lose and here is a listing of GIA fees.
"REPORT VERIFICATION
Confirm that your GIA report matches your stone. Must be submitted along with
original GIA Report. Mounted items must be submitted directly to the Carlsbad
Laboratory. Contact [email protected] for details.
Letter accompanying original report 50% of applicable report fee"

The fees vary based on the size of the stone.
Depending on your location you also have the cost of shipping both ways and likely a fee for the jeweler to remove the stone and submit it.
More information in the pdf file from the link above.

Don't worry Candygrl. When i thought my Argyle laser inscription was missing, the big name jeweler who mounted my stone told me that sometimes the stones were sent to them without the laser inscription and all they had to do was send it back to where they were purchased; who would send them back to GIA to get the inscription added and then the stones were reshipped back to them after it was done. I suggest you contact GIA and they will tell you what to do. I am sure all you will have to do is to send them the stone, they will examine it and either tell you it has been replaced or they will put the laser inscription on for you. I hope for you that all it was was just a simple human error :-) and your stone just got missed when they were putting on inscriptions. GIA certainly knows that it does happen.

My case was not so easy. I thought my inscription was missing and that was why those employees told me about the simplicity of fixing a missing inscription. The employees thought it was the GIA inscription that was missing but that is not what was missing. It was the Argyle inscription. Argyle inscriptions cannot be replaced because the mine is now closed so was no possible way to get it one. Thankfully, i had my diamond removed from the setting and there it was. With what you are going thru right now you can easily understand how stressful that situation could have been for me and i totally empathies with your situation .

If the diamond as been replaced, you will need to remember who would have had the opportunity to do it. If that is what happened, would be awesome if you could prove it and make them replace the fake and return a natural one. And, if possible get them criminally charged.

Since your insurance company has been notified I dont recommend doing anything until they say what they want done.

Thank you for your reply! My thought on this all along has been to send it to GIA and have them look and decide etc. I am definitely stressed out about everything Sorry about your situation as well.

I hope your situation resolves itself quickly and easily as mine did.

Not long ago, I was collaborating with one of your favorite appraisers on a family diamond for a young man. The appraiser inspected and graded the loose diamond an sent it to me to create the mount and set the stone before returning it to said appraiser. The diamond looked clean enough on first glance. I cleaned the diamond as a matter of course and inspected under my setting scope. Knowing when and from where this diamond was sold to the initial client, I expected to find an inscription.

Gave it a long bath in an ultrasonic cleaner, steamed it thoroughly, and had another look through my setting scope. Nothing easily found this time either but I tilted the diamond so that my lights cast a shadow in the pockets of the inscription and the inscription came into view. There was no background "black" in the inscription but apparently there had been some general schmutz (finger oils?) in there that blocked light and we had not seen the inscription.

I went to GIA site, found the report number and sent a copy of that report to the appraiser. Lemonade from lemons, the appraiser's own report exactly matched the GIA report. Little time lost. Everybody wins. Smiles all around. One more mystery closed.

May your mystery be soon resolved.

Update: I am sending my ring this Friday to USAA for their lab to inspect it for the inscription. They said it will be a few days until I will have an answer. We can discuss options then. I’m hoping and praying it’s there! If not I will explore my options at that point. I will come back and post an update once I hear from them. Thank you everyone for your responses :)

thank you for the update, wishing you all the best with getting good news!

*UPDATE*
So in an unfortunate turn of events I badly damaged my Vatche Grace setting. My center stone is fine so I had it put back into a solitaire setting until I find a replacement. However during the swap they finally found the laser inscription!! Yay! Now to find a replacement setting. Also waiting on insurance to see what they will cover. I do love a classic solitaire but I must admit I am struggling to get used to it!8F53CAA4-18EC-4C7A-954D-D2E86C0E4E74.jpeg
