before Jerry recut. I took some measurements before I sent it off. It was 9.06 carats when I bought it. 13.6mm x 10.3mm x 9.6mm deep.

I never really had any plans for this - but its growing on me. Do you all think it would hold its pink better if I mounted it in an enclosed (bezel) rose gold setting? Thanks!

Can you sit the stone on a copper penny? I'm not sure if the blush colour will make the muddiness more apparent.

hmmmm-good point! I'll try after school drop off this morning. Thanks Chrono!

I think it's remarkable that Jerry can recut a stone, improve it, and still keep the same dimensions! :appl: He's a wizard, I really should send some of my rings with lackluster stones to him and see what he can do.

Did his jeweler reset it or did yours do it?

I can see the light return is a lot better, and the bow tie is gone, which is much better.

But I can't see much more than that . . .

Can you take a closer picture, please? It's all kind of far away . . .

iLander,
If you look closely, the stone isn't set at all. Jbkhere merely plopped the oval onto her WF pear setting to make it easier for photography. I agree that the performance of the stone is improved with the recut, showing less extinction.

Hi Chrono,

Actually I couldn't really see that, my eyes aren't the best.

I was hoping for a close shot so that I could make out the faceting pattern . . . 8)

So here are some closer shots with some rose gold bands I have. I'll attach one of Jerry's pics too - his are much better than mine....

iLander...

I think the dimensions are the same, because Jerry probably left the top of the stone and the girldle alone. Im pretty sure he just recut the bottom of the stone from a yucky step-cut into a brilliant-style pavillion. I do this all the time with all my ovals in my better stones. I don't mind putting a few bucks into my stones to make them perform better *cough-Chrono-cough* :naughty:

I'd love close up shots to see the details too - I think Jbk needs to crop the original photograph in order to do that.

Rose gold is perfect for it! I still wouldn't bezel it though because I'm concerned it might dampen the brilliance.

Mister Smarty Pants, I got the reference about the recut which I'll address in my thread.

one more of Jerry's pics. I also have purchased that sapphire in the middle from him too <what the heck am I doing?> So I'm also thinking of what to do with that little gem too :D

Having just looked at your other thread, where JewelJunke posted the amethyst in your setting, the colour on this recut isn't anywhere near as "WOW" as the amethyst suggested.

(Yikes! - I hate to be harsh :blackeye: I just love the look of the other one on your skin moreso than this colouring)

Not harsh at all! I don't mind one bit. That said OOOOHHHHHH!!!!! I LOVE that amethyst!! HOW will I find one just like it???!!!!

And I agree with you. IF I set this tourmaline - its not going to get worn anywhere near as much as my pear halo. That pear will pretty much be worn as my wedding set.

Thank you - I was worried you'd block me for life!!! tee hee!

NOW - that setting you just posted, I think would really make THIS stone punch up! the prongs keep it raised ever so slightly from the setting so light will pass somewhat, and the bright white halo would be an incredible contrast for this particular tourmaline. I love the amount of metal and the melee banding detail! If this were me, that would be my winning combo for this particular stone - CONGRATS!! (hoping you put these 2 together!)

Unfortunately pink tourmalines will often move to brownish tones and I'm not sure that even if you put it in rose gold that will stop it from happening. It's just natures way of saying "I want to change my clothes tonight"! I don't know if you have a budget but it sounds like you're really hankering for an amethyst? If so, why don't you leave the tourmaline unset for now. You can always do it later but why don't you use your finances for something that you will love all the time? I hope that makes sense????

some close up's

How high is the setting? With such a big stone sitting in a setting that sits even higher off the finger makes me nervous about hitting it and damaging the stone.
