Two of my friends are hosting my baby shower (well, throwing it, it's at my house). Is it customary to get them a little gift to say thank you? I didn't have a bridal shower so I'm sort of new to this whole thing. If so, anybody have any good ideas? Keep in mind that both are traveling from out of state for the shower- One is a 4 hour drive, the other is a 1.5 hour flight. So any gifts would need to be easily portable. Thoughts?

I would definitely give a hostess gift.

I like to give people books that I know they'll love, but only if I know they're readers. Those are nice and portable, at least!

What about a set of really nice teas? They're smallish, and kind of indulgent. (But more likely to be used than bath bubbles!) I think I gave my friend a set of fancy teas and some really adorable ceramic tea rests for hosting one of my bridal showers. OMG, I LOVE tea rests, they're small and great for tea lovers.

On that note, fancy edibles are always great gifts. Chocolates, candies, etc.

I also love to give people quirky or whimsical things that they would never buy themselves. The Paper Source always has strange little gift things, as does Francesca's. (Not sure if they're national chains, but I think they are.)

ETA:

Do you have time to order a personalized note pad or some stationery? I always love those types of gifts, too.

Thanks for the tips! They are both readers, but I know one uses a Kindle and the other an iPad.

Hmm...I love the edible idea. The only problem is one of them is quite overweight (obese) and I know she's trying to lose weight...and I'd feel bad giving the skinny one chocolate but not the other one, you know?

What if I sent each of them flowers after the fact? For delivery on the Monday after the shower?

This sounds perfect, too. Great idea!

And, I hate the way e-readers are making it so difficult to give books as gifts!

I think the flowers are a lovely idea.

And, for what it's worth, I have a Kindle, but I still love reading "real" books. There's something about the feel of a book in your hands, and turning actual pages, that is so satisfying. The main reason I like the Kindle is that I don't have to leave the house to buy a new book. Pure laziness.

I have a Kindle, too. But I only read about 5% to 10% of my books on it. I still LOVE real books.
