otherwise known as "please help enable me." lol.

I have been looking for a specific type of bracelet for years upon years for sentimental purposes. Today I found one on the bay. However I am not supposed to be spending money right now. I could walk away knowing that another deal will come up, but this is 29 grams of solid 14k gold for under $900 in the style I've been looking for. It would be silly to walk away, wouldn't it? That's just about scrap weight. I feel that it's a really good value! There's a second place in 18k which is available for $3000 which I definitely can't do right now.

I'm of the opinion (and I'm not saying I'm right!) that gold really doesn't lose it's value. How likely is it that the prices are going to dip making this an impulsive purchase? Now, if I'm wrong, I can walk away. If I'm right I need to hear it, and fast! Thank you!

14K gold isn't "solid "and the chances are excellent that the price of gold will go both higher and lower than where it is now in your lifetime. If you have been looking for a certain bracelet for, "sentimental purposes" and want to buy it, I say you should buy it. Just don't try to convince yourself that it's a good investment! That's just my 2 and a half cents!

of course you are correct, nothing but 24K is solid. That was a mistype on my part due to the fact that this particular item is widely available gold filled or plated, but not as easily in 14 or 18k. So yes, not solid.

I know gold in the past has varied. you know what? I have never actually paid attention to trends. That's something I think I should go read up on.

There is sentiment involved here, for sure. I'm not sure that's a good enough reason to buy *for me at this time.*

Thanks for your response-I've some thinking and reading to do!

it may be solid but 14kt is 58% gold the balance is mostly copper and silver maybe some nickel. 31.103 grams is a troy ounce so 29 grams of 14k is 16.96 grams of gold, which even at todays grossly over-valued prices is worth less than your $900. Sorry I cannot enable you on this one. Great to buy when the market is low but this is the height of the market.

the bracelet contains a melt value of $754,so $900 sounds way too high for used jewlery... :knockout:

thanks for the input. it's actually $850 shipped. I use the scrap value as a guideline, but have never used it as a cap. Is that something you do? I would imagine that people would not sell below scrap as that's what they could easily get. Am I thinking about this incorrectly? Thanks for the feedback.

thank you-I guess what makes me feel like I should jump is that I don't have a lot of faith it will go down. however looking at trends clearly that is a possibility. my point (in being uneducated and not knowing the trends) was that if the price is likely to go up over time it would be a good time to jump. a bit of research shows that's not the case so thank you. I have more reading to do, but I do really appreciate all your feedback.

I never factor in the value of scrap! Naturally, I consider the price of gold when I buy gold jewelry (especially when I consider whether it is a great moment to commission a solid 24K bangle bracelet to go with my set of bangle bracelets!!!). However, I never considered the price of scrap! I advised you to buy it if the piece had sentimental value to it. The price of this piece will probably not go down even if the price of gold does! It won't be an investment, but you probably won't be losing out on a window of opportunity to get a good price, either!

oh, that set of bangles sounds especially delicious!

I definitely heard you, Deb! I just have a tendency to be impulsive and am trying desperately to temper that. It's why I'm talking it through here! I just recently acquired a lovely 18k antique bracelet that I probably overpaid for, but it was worth it as I truly love it. Making another purchase on it's heels isn't something I should really be doing! I'm just being diligent in looking at all angles before I go ahead with it.

It would be a no-brainer if it was higher karat, which is probably a sign I should cool my jets. I so prefer the color of 18-24k. funny how the color changes so much once you hit that 18k mark, isn't it? I don't really have much in 14k yellow and I suspect, now that I think about it, that the lighter color in a substantial piece will bother me when paired with my others.

There is sentimental value here, but it's not a terribly uncommon thing. I can just never seem to find it when I DO have the cash in hand! If I wait until I can save some funds I could get something equivalent in 18k (for a higher price, clearly) and be much happier in the long run. Thank you!

not true...you'll be lucky to get 90% of gold content or about $680 for this bracelet.
