So I visited Yekutiel @ IDJ. It was a great experience to check out diamonds with him.
We had created a short list of about 7-8 2 carats/ I/ VS2 diamonds and he had one of those already in stock.
In his office he had pretty much every machine you can think of - Gemex, Idealscope, ASET, another machine to detect lab diamonds and other enhancements etc.
So the diamond he already had in stock had great Gemex performance. However on Idealscope and ASET we detected some light leakage. HCA score for the diamond wax 2.6.
Then he opened bunch of other softwares - one of them was almost like an X-ray machine and the light leakage became really easy to spot.
Then we went through Rapnet to see other diamonds we had shortlisted - some of them were in the US and some were overseas. Some of them had Idealscope and H&A images uploaded and some not. We ruled out a few diamonds and in the end shortlisted two. Those two will arrive next week and I will go back for an inspection.
It was a cool experience and brought home a few things for me :
1. Not many people have the option to have such a thorough review the way Yekutiel did for me - so it probably makes sense to pay the premium to buy from a place like Whiteflash
2.All of these diamonds were GIA Triple X, HCA score < 2 (with one exception) and were selected based on narrow cut range : Table 54-57, Depth 61-62.5,Crown Angle 34-35.5 and pavilion 40.5-41. Yet there were large difference in polish symmetry and light performance.
Anyway I just wanted to share the experience.
