Green Gem (Emerald?) Ring

This is a ring that my father bought back in ''96.

I was pleased that he showed it to me and let me borrow it to photograph because I wanted to practice photographing a green gem with my new light box and lights.

He doesn''t know if the ring is real gold or not and I couldn''t find a karat mark on the band anywhere so I think I will try and get it tested this week to find out. He remembers that the jeweler claimed the diamonds were real and to my barely educated eye, they do look to be real. I don''t have any cz here to compare them too but will try and have them checked this week also when I have the gold tested.

My big curiosity is in regards to the green gem. It was sold as an emerald and I have only closely looked at one other emerald so I don''t consider myself to be any type of naked eye judge of the stone. I was hoping some of you could offer some input on the stone with what you can see from the pictures. I would appreciate finding out what you experienced PS''ers look for when going through a checklist of a stone, supposedly an emerald, that hasn''t been to a lab yet.

On a side note, I would appreciate any recommendations on a lab to have the stone tested. I haven''t ever sent anything to a lab before so I am new to that... just like everything else with gemstones/jewelry.

I am just interested in finding out the basic information about the stone, no extra frills.

Thanks ahead of time for taking a look. Criticisms and advice on the photography are very welcome.

Here is a close-up on a bit of an angle where I think I got good lighting on it.

View from the side. Let me know if any other views of the stone will help.

no one here is gonna be able to know for sure - but you might get some guesses of tourmaline and who knows - maybe it is emerald. You''ll have to take it to a jeweler to find out.

It''s really hard to tell from the photo whether there''s a possibility or not. Something about the color bugs me, but really I cannot say unless it''s inspected in person. A local jeweler could do a quick check on whether it''s an emerald or not. They probably won''t be able to tell you if it''s natural vs. synthetic though. As for labs, I''d recommend AGL in NYC at http://www.aglgemlab.com/. You can call them and mail it in for inspection. They''ll give you the best answer as far as what it is and the treatments it may or may not have. For either a lab check or a jeweler you''re going to have to have it pulled from the setting.

Pretty ring and nice photography. I hope it turns out to be real!
