Does anyone have a green sapphire? What are your thoughts on a green sapphire for an engagement ring? I love emeralds but they are too soft and too costly.

I think it would be lovely and hold up well for every day wear. I have a lighter mint green sapphire and really enjoy it.

Someone posted in I think the bezel thread in SMTB a JM 3 stone like Uppy's but w/a green sapph center and it is gorgeous. It was quite a while ago and I don't recall who it was. I think I saved the pic tho. I'll look.

Here is my ring. The color on the side view is more true to live. It's not a bright green but more of an earthy green.

packrat--i would love to see it!

Thanks Bgray.

The green of a sapphire is nothing like the green of an emerald, so if you want something emerald green, you're out of luck. However, sapphire is a durable gem for an e-ring.

HI, I don't have it set yet but I have a beautiful teal green parti-sapphire that I was planning to use as my ering. I'll try and attach pics. Difference I suppose between Emerald and sapphire is I imagine it would be difficult to get that pure green "glow" that emeralds have... Best of luck finding what you what! :wavey:

HotPozzum, you sapphire is lovely.

this is the stone i am considering. (that black line showing at the bottom is not in the stone)

That is not emerald green, and looks very dark in tone, which isn't a good thing.

well there really are no emerald green sapphires that i can find but i thought the color was a lovely blue green. you think its too dark?

I personally think it is too dark bgray - after all, this is shown with professional lighting, most likely to look its best..so it is probable it will be even darker in normal viewing.

I have not seen before a green sapphire that the colour really appeals - I think the green of a tsavorite (garnet) or of a blue green tourmaline are much more attractive, and I believe you can get closer to an 'emerald - like' green than in sapphires.
These are not quite as hard as sapphire, but still suitable for ring stones.

Search function still not working great I think, but I will dig up some photos for you if you like..?

thanks--perhaps you are right. the shape is so perfect and the color seemed really lovely. however i know what you mean about lighting.

Hey Bgray,

I think you should consider a tsavorite, they can be very beautiful, such as Yingh's recently posted ring:

The NSF stone does not appeal to me nearly as much as Marcy's does. Hers is more mossy in color.
However, if you are looking for a more emerald green, do look at Tsavorites. I have an emerald and a tsavorite, and they look nothing alike when side by side, but both are beautiful in their own way.

HotPozzum, that's a really pretty stone!

I agree!

I think tsavorite is a very lovely green. If you have a Shane Company in your area they sell loose colored sapphires and some of them are a nice green - not as saturated as a tsavorite but a true green.

thanks everyone --I am going to keep looking. i do love that mossy color...

Here's a nice one, although slightly less than a carat, but well cut, and very inexpensive, and untreated (to my knowledge, sapphires are never treated to look like this, but I could be wrong). Uli (osirisgems.com) is a very good seller. I and several others have purchased gems from him, and his cutting is magnificent IMO.

wow the color is amazing --i am looking for 5 plus carats

That might be difficult to find. Ask Uli if he can cut one for you that size.
