Green stone as baguette?

Hi all,

First-time poster and still climbing the learning curve, so bear with me....

I''m beginning the search for the proper engagement ring for my g/f, and I''m narrowing down the setting choices. I''d like to get a 3-stone ring with a diamond in the center, but since her favorite color is green, I''m thinking that green stones of some type as baguettes would be great.

As she and I have gone shopping, we''ve looked at various stones but we both thought emeralds and tourmalines are a bit too green; a softer green would work better and not distract from the center stone too much. After looking around, it seems that peridot has a nice lighter green/yellow shade.

Do any you knowledgeable folk have any other suggestions for a nice, light green stone that''s also reasonably hard (to resist wear and tear)?

Also, if you have any suggestions on the best places to purchase said stone, where I can also customize the shape, I''d love to hear them.

Maybe a light green tourmaline or tsavorite garnet? I would find out if she prefers that to a diamond.

You''ll probably pay less for the paler colours as they are less sought after.

I wouldn''t personally go for peridot - it''s only a 6.5 on the moh and I''ve had more than one break on me - and they were in earrings not a ring!

You wouldn''t want to wear it every day with them in.

As a tsav fan, I would probably go with them - they are untreated, 7.5 on the moh, it''s not hard to find a clean one and are sparkley.

Wink could source you some nice ones.

Are you going with tapered baguettes (a la Harry Winston) or or straight ones?

The people at Saturn Jewels will customize any of their semi mounts to your specs. You could incorporate your green stones in combination with the diamonds in the mounts. Here's a pic of some of their mounts. I have spoken to the owners and am considering them as a possibility for the remount of one of my diamonds. They have been very easy to work with so far.

Okay, I''m going to be the contrary one! Just because I have a favorite color, it does not mean I''d want that color in my engagement ring. Green particularly does not go with everything, and I would never even consider adding green side stones unless she herself expressed that that was what she wanted. Please go with all diamonds! Save the green for a lovely right hand ring for her birthday or an anniversary!

Lol, I''m going to disagree with Diamondseeker here.

I think adding some coloured stones makes for more of a unique ring.

I designed an e-ring for my FSIL with a 1.52ct rb with 0.35 emerald pears on the sides. She is American, not English, so I was a little wary if she would like it. She loves it and says she gets loads of compliments on it.


I have a green e-ring - it was totally my choice of stone, design etc etc and I don''t find green a problem with clothes etc - it goes with most things.

I''m also not the kind of person who wears rings on the whole, so a RHR wouldn''t be my thing. Sad in a way as there are loads of gorgeous rings out there, but they would never get worn.

At the end of the day, you know your gf and her tastes, but it seems to me that she is quite into the green idea.

I would probably do a very simple setting for the ring.

Here are some emerald shaped tsavorite garnets, 4x2.5mm-4x3mm.

Any of the following should be easy for basically any decent jeweler to set.

Some tsavorite princess cuts, 2.5mm, these will fit into everything including many pre-made mounts that a jeweler would have, as 2.5mm is a standard size for side stones in diamonds and other colored gems.

Figured I would throw these in to be different, they are kind of blueish green and obviously incandescent lighting will change the color to the reddish, but for hardness and everyday wear, it is hard to beat alexandrite. If one could find some nice green colored crysoberyl or sapphire that actually matches that would be nice but it is pretty difficult to do that.

I would stay away from peridots as sidestones for an e-ring. They are much too soft. Tsavorites and tourmalines are better choices and since you want them to be very light, they''ll be reasonably priced. Wink is a reputable vendor of diamonds and coloured gemstones. Chrysoberyl is an 8.5 on the moh, so will be quite a bit harder than tsavorite - but you may find it harder to source...

Alexandrite is a variety of chrysoberyl I believe. I only like REALLY good ones and they are serious $$$$.

Wink found my tsav for me and is currently hunting me down another.


I love the look of tapered baguette sides on an rb. I just had Wink do exactly that (but all in diamonds) for my brother - it's such a classic look.

Another question: When requesting a tapered stone from a dealer, I assume specifying the cut is easy enough, but how do you specify the dimensions appropriately?

Normally, you find the setting first and then the stones - unless you want to go custom, which will take longer and cost more.

The stones are then selected to fit the setting sizes.

Best bet once you have decided what you want is to contact whoever you want to get the setting from and ask them to source the stones - they will have better contacts than you will be able to find.

If you are using your own B&M jeweller, I don''t know what to suggest - but if you want to use a PS vendor there should be no problem and you can get the diamond from them as well.

Remember - if you source the stones from one place and have them set elsewhere, you will need insurance to cover the stones as a jeweller won''t take responsibility for setting stones from other vendors.
