Hi guys - so I think my mom is finally ready to get her gorgeous 2.5 ct OEC diamond reset out of its large yellow gold setting (see pictures below), and I wanted to surprise her and get her a beautiful green stone (her favorite color) that could be set into that setting as a kind of cocktail ring. I was thinking of either a peridot or a tsavorite. I want it to have really fantastic color either way, but don''t have strong feelings about tsav vs. peridot. I don''t want it to be super pricey either, and would be open to other green stone suggestions. It would need to be about 8.4-8.6mm diameter, round in shape like the diamond to fit the setting. Please help me figure out what kind of stone to get and where to get it - specific stone suggestions are welcome as well. Thanks!

That''s a funky cool setting, what about chrome green tourmaline to?

I don''t know that I''m familiar with what color that is. Do you have a picture of one? I''m certainly open to suggestions - thank you.

Peridot would be less expensive, tsavorite is pretty pricey these days. What about chrome or green tourmaline?

I think a tourmaline would be best ....the intense greens that come from Nooristan in Afghanistan! they are killers...peridots though pretty have a somewhat shallow colour to them....a good tourmaline in smaller sizes would be under 100USD a carat at American prices I guess

This ring has a green tourmaline in it.

I wanted a green stone for my ring project and was looking for a tsavorite. Unfortunately, the prices have gotten crazy so I went with a green tourmaline. Here is a link to some tourmalines showing the many different colors available.

Wow, what a beautiful stone! Maybe you could look at some tourmalines. They are pretty stones and affordable. How is your mom setting the OEC?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I will check on tourmalines. Any suggestions for good websites that sell nice ones?

Miranda - I LOVE this stone. Its originally from either Gump''s or Tiffany early-ish in the century, and was set in my grandmother''s engagement ring originally. Its approximately 2.5 ct, I-K color, VS2 clarity (graded in setting). My mom had it re-set in the YG setting in the ''80''s. She''s having it re-set into a three-stone ring with sapphire pear sides, classic Tiffany style but with a slightly more substantial band and double-claw prongs on the stone. I''m sure I''ll be posting for advice on that project soon. Thanks for the nice comments!

Just make sure that whoever you get it from, that the stone doesn''t have lots of extinction or black''s out in certain lighting. You don''t want a stone that is so dark, it looks black. Same thing with tsavorite, or most darker green stones.

I linked to a site in my previous reply.

I would just make sure that you contact the seller about the saturation of the stone before you buy it. Some sites have pictures that are not exactly the same color that they are portrayed. Someone in one of the pricescope threads bought a pink tourmaline from a popular site, and it looked like a hot pink shade in the picture, but it received it, it had more of a brown cast to it. If the dealer cannot give you any information on the saturation, I would look somewhere else. You cannot judge by a picture alone.

Thanks for all the great links you guys - I will definitely check those out. And I''ll be sure to ask about the color saturation and how uniform the color is. Honestly, I tend to be such a nervous buyer that I''ll probably only buy if its from a site with a good return policy. Lots to check out...
