Hi everyone! Wishing all of you the very best Christmas and New Year! I’ve found this amazing community just about a week ago and this is my first post (I’m generally a lurker and a bit afraid to post).
My husband recently gifted me diamond studs (for our 14th anniversary and 4+ kids:))) and I like the setting but just wondering what the type is it? It seems like a mix of crown and basket 6-prong setting.
How do you think is it looking ok on me (not too small)? Not protruding too much?

I’ve tried 3-prong martini of the same cttw (0.85) but it got lost on my earlobe.. it’s my first diamond studs and I’ve had not much choice because I’m living in Myanmar and couldn’t order online from reputable foreign vendors (because our customs fee for jewelry is 30% and now very high currency conversion rates were set by banks). I also couldn’t get ideal cut diamonds because of the same reason. Mine are 0.43 and 0.42 G VVS 2 triple Ex (GIA). I’ve had no option to downgrade in colour and clarity in order to increase carat weight because there were only two pairs of earrings available - one in martini (J, VVS1) and one in this setting (G, VVS2). I wasn’t able to pick bigger stones because of limited budget. But they are very sparky and have a lot of fire anyway.. These earrings came with jackets also but I don’t know parameters of melee. I just worry that this setting looks a bit strange

Oh, I’m sorry for the photos (too much of them)

Could anyone also advise me how to pay for HCA tool other than PayPal? I have JCB bank cards, PayPal option is not available for Myanmar  I’ve checked my stones with HCA (one was between 1 and 2, and another about 2.6), but I don’t remember the results exactly (didn’t make a screenshot)

Nice earrings and jackets, no idea if the setting has a name or not though, or how to pay for using the HCA tool, sorry.

Feel free to posts pics - PSers like pics!

They look great on you IMHO.

DK :))

Thank you for your reply! :) Setting is a bit strange, I’ve never seen like this. I think it’s not a local setting, the shape is not usual for Myanmar

The setting is amazing. This type of setting is very popular in Greece, where I live. Here, they use it for diamond earrings, pendants and engagement rings. My original engagement ring had a very very similar setting and I loved it! It doesn't look strange at all, it looks great and makes the studs have a wonderful presence on your earlobes! There is a special term for this setting in the Greek language but I don't know how we would call it in English. I think that some use the term "illusion setting", because it creates the illusion of the diamond being somehow bigger than its true size, when you look at it face up.
The jackets also are very beautiful!!!
Congratulations on this amazing acquisition!!!!

Your earrings look lovely on your ears. The size is nice, and the setting doesn’t look strange at all.
I’m sorry I can’t help you with your other questions.

Natylad, thank you so much! I didn’t know about illusion setting before but I’ve noticed that the setting of my studs is wider than the stone diameter so it gives an illusion of larger diamond. I wondered if there’s the same effect as bezel setting :)

Garnetgirl, thank you for the encouraging response! I’m happy that it doesn’t look strange because I was really concerned after I didn’t find anything similar on the forum and vendor’s websites. I mean that usually studs settings have a V-shape but not as cylindrical as this (except for bezels) but maybe it was just a mind-clean issue :D

The earring look very pretty on you imo. You can try inputting the diamond stats on diamondscreener.com to see where they fall in terms of cut.

Lulu_ma, thank you for the advice! I’ve checked my stones at this site and both of them sit in the intersection between GIA Ex and AGS ideal. Hope, it’s a good sigh :) actually I don’t see any difference in their performance side by side but I’m not experienced enough

While this particular style of setting isn't as common in the USA, I have seen them, I believe they are called Buttercup settings. Several people have gone out of their way to have similar settings custom made. I always thought they were very pretty, and a nice way to add a little extra coverage without having to go the bezel route.

They look lovely on you.

vintageinjune, thank you for your suggestion! I’ve heard only about martini, basket/crown and bezel settings so this type is a new for me :)

MamaBee, thanks a lot for the kind words! I’m feeling much better about my studs after such encouragement from all of members. Actually I’ve fist time tried the diamond studs about 8 months ago while doing some photo shooting for clothes advertising campaign (for our friend who has a small business). These studs she brought for me to wear during photo shoots and these ones were huge :) but I’ve got an idea and wanted something smaller for everyday wear. Here is my photo with these big studs

They look lovely! :kiss2:

In the Philippines we would call this an “illusion setting” too. They bezel it in a way that makes it look like the diamond is bigger than it actually is. I’m sorry I’ve no idea about the HCA tool, hopefully someone more knowledgable will give you more info.

Wear your beautiful new studs proudly! They are wonderful!

Margauxmines, thank you for your response!:) Yes, they’ve had much more presence on my earlobe than martini studs of the same total carat weight (0.85). Maybe bezels will give the same effect

I think the earrings are lovely and look really nice on your ears. I agree that the setting looks like a "belcher" or "buttercup" style.

The clothing you're modelling looks pretty too.

What a lovely photo! The earrings you are wearing in the shoot are lovely but so are yours!

Welcome to our happy place. I hope you will enjoy Pricescope enough to stay and play with us.

Normally an illusion head and a bezel provide a different effect. A bezel is more noticeable, and often of yellow or rose gold, making it stand out instantly as a demarcation of the border between the diamond and the mounting.

An illusion head is normally white, which tends to make the diamond appear larger than it is. The illusion is best served when the diamond and the mounting are both meticulously clean and the mounting well polished.

I agree with the others, your earrings are beautiful and look very nice in your ears. The wide backs should provide a comfortable base for the posts and help to keep the earrings from drooping.

Thank you!:) Yes, maybe it’s a some variation of buttercup. The clothing is Myanmar traditional style which is also used by majority of women here as an everyday wear

Wink, thank you very much for your reply! This forum is wonderful, just in one week I’ve gotten so much helpful information about diamonds and also so many warm responses from people here.
I clean these studs regularly with dishwasher soap and warm water but afraid to use windex with ammonium because of its possible corrosive effect on rhodium plating. We don’t have ammonium free windex here.
