Hello there,

First off: I am new to this so please excuse my lack of knowledge.

I am planning to make my own engagement ring with the help of a relative who has done a few rings and has the right equipment. After a lot of research and talking to my girlfriend's friends and family I am aiming at something similar to this: http://www.onepartgypsy.com/2013/02/a-ring-to-build-a-home-in. So I would need a grey-blue (smokey) diamond.

Can anybody suggest which size the diamond is in the pictures? I would assume around 1.25ct, but I have no idea.
It also says "rose cut". Could that be?

The more important question: Where would I find a stone like this? I have been trying to use Google as a help but to be honest I don't know what exactly I am looking for.

Would it make sense to buy a stone like this online? I feel I would like to have such a stone in my hands before feeling comfortable with it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Stopster

A rose cut is a cut that is flat on the bottom and has no table (the facets on the top form a dome). This is a good explanation: http://www.langantiques.com/university/index.php/Rose_Cut

The diamond on that ring is not a rose cut at all and, specially, it is not an upside down rose cut (this makes no sense at all). That sounded like a complicated story to excuse a particularly shallow stone. Since the stone is described as included and rough, the cut won't make much difference, since there will be little internal refraction (bouncing around) of light.

In this kind of cut, it is specially hard to go by weight as a proxy for size, since the diameter of the stone of a given weight will vary depending on whether it is really a rose cut or a round, how tall the dome, etc. Think in terms of diameter.

Do you want a nearly opaque stone? It will not sparkle like a diamond is expected to sparkle. At most, you will get large flashes of light when one facet reflects the light that hits it. It is an unusual look that is rather trendy (Todd Reed is the man behind it, mostly).

You will probably have more luck finding something online since this isn't something most jewelry stores carry. Almost all online sellers have a review period during which you can return a stone. This way, you can see the stone in your house, in the light it will be worn in (contrasted to jewelry store light, which is designed to make gems look their best).

Rose cut diamonds are popular again, perhaps because Jennifer Aniston got engaged with a huge rose cut? I've seen the price per carat increase just a bit. I love rose cuts and always look for them, but I actually just learned of one vendor who I think is doing them justice in some lovely vintage inspired pieces. Not sure about cost, but certainly worth a look.

Fancy gray diamonds had been affordable, until a few years ago when a very large and spectacular gray sold at auction for well over $100K per carat. Now, everyone is sourcing them so good ones are hard to find and they are pricey! Singlestone did have one gray, I think and the setting was spectacular.

Very fun project! Good luck!

ok i have no idea what your budget is but....

Thats not a rose cut thats a normal cut diamond thats jut opaque.

This isn't opaque, but ugh the color is spectacular and the cut is actually really good for a color stone diamond. This is the color you like, will actually sparkle (which that one won't) and will be more likely to retain its value, as opaque diamonds really aren't worth that much. If she really wants an opaque stone, ignore this, but if not, and this is in budget, i think its a really nice option

That is a lovely stone!

OP - if you/GF really like the look of your inspiration ring, you may also want to consider rose-cut blue sapphires which often have a gray secondary hue.

I bought a rose-cut 6mm round Ceylon blue sapphire a couple years ago from OdysseyGems (can't remember if it was the eBay shop or the regular website) and it is quite pretty - this particular rose-cut is quite blue with minimal gray, and very clear (not opaque in the least) however.

Greys with secondary of green and/or yellow and/or brown are still pretty inexpensive and might have that "smokey" look he wants. Now if you're talking fancy grey with a violet or blue secondary, then they are $$$$$$.

Fancy pure grey (no other secondaries) are somewhere in between those two color types for price, although not anywhere near as expensive as if they had a violet or blue secondary or primary.

I'm talking non-opaque diamonds here.

Clean and clear rose cut white/colourless diamonds are not inexpensive. Clean and clear light gray FCDs little less expensive comparatively. Included or opaque gray FCDs are very inexpensive and generally not stocked by jewellers due to the very low demand.

As mentioned by everyone above, the diamond in the picture is opaque and is not a rose cut diamond (shallow cut). There is nothing wrong with liking a stone like this as we all have different preferences.

They're using opaque colored diamonds in lots of designer jewelry these days and marking the prices up and up, just because they're diamonds. I think it's a good way to use these gems and make a decent profit. Nothing wrong with liking them however, just don't overpay for them

You might also look at gray spinels. They have gone up recently but may still be less than a (non-opaque) gray diamond.

You might try gempalace on Etsy. I've seen some similar type diamonds listed there although they are more like rose cuts. Here is a picture of one of his listings-although I don't think the greyish one is available anymore. He may have more stock than what he has listed.

I love the idea that you are going to make it yourself - very romantic. :appl:

However I'm going to point out the obvious here - please be VERY sure this is what your GF will want. Friends & family advice aside - an included dull grey, lifeless diamond (which is what I see when I look at the link you provided) is a far cry from most engagement rings out there. IF you are 100% certain she will be over the moon - go for it! Clearly as the wise Kenny says "people vary" which is lovely.

Personally I'd be more going down the route of finding out WHY she likes it - Is grey her favourite colour? What kind of gem cut does she favour - minimal flashes or bright sparkles? Then you can go from there to get her the perfect stone! Maybe even chose a few and offer a selection - you pick out the final one together
