Hi everyone,

I've been on the hunt for the perfect stone for my e-ring and I'm starting to worry that it may actually just not exist so any leads any of you could potentially pass on would be so, so appreciated. I've been searching for a sparkly grey sapphire, preferably pear or oval shaped, but I'm open to other options. I'd like it to be primarily grey, but at this point I would probably settle for hints of purple or blue in it, too. I'd also like for it to be at least 1.5ish ct, but I'm also realizing I may not be able to be too picky on that, either. If any of you could point me in the direction of anyone who may have one, or may be able to find one, I will probably just cry with relief and gratitude.

Thanks in advance!

Forgive my hairsplitting, but I think it is important to consider that 'grey' is not a color by itself, but the lack of color mixed with a certain amount of black (also no color). So, the only the gem that you may be searching for is one with very low saturation (of any color) and not too dark in tone (not to much black). Grey is kind of a dirty word for a gem, which is why you rarely see a gem advertised as 'beautiful grey'. The upside is, that it should not be very costly and you can invest in a good cut, like the one above.

Not many stock gray sapphire ... Not that they do not exist, the color is rarely in demand.

The more popular - therefore more available - gray gem is spinel. It us at least as nice as sapphire in every way.

As Norman wrote, 'gray' is not a word often put on the tags of sapphire. Someone who stocks, e.g. Montana sapphire, may have quite a few grays that they never knew what to do with ! You would certainly have to ask ...

A cutter could make one for you on demand (there are names on the Colour section of Pricescope)

Then, most gray stones would have a dash of color - e.g. WWW.

Might I say that 'gray' is still only starting to be something - these things do not have much of a history of value & it seems bizarre to see prices too far out of the timeline.

Here are two from GemFix, both are Montana Sapphires, both are oval, the first is 1.43ct so close to your size preference, and the other is smaller at just under 1 carat. I prefer the 1.43ct myself but the smaller one is very nice too. Check out the videos, being sure to select the "HD" option in the settings for best viewing.

This is just my personal experience, but you'll have an "easier" time finding a gray spinel or diamond. Elle of The Gemstone Project has loved gray spinels before they were having a moment - and she has a few listed in her Etsy shop - and Leibish has a section for grays now. I'd probably contact Elle, if I were you. But I'll keep an eye out for any sapphires that fit the bill! Did you list a budget?

ETA: Of course M&W has them! hahahaha http://mayerandwatt.com/gemstones/stones-photo-gallery/sapphire/ Should have looked there first. Contact Elle. She deals with them and can let you know what their inventory is. And oh, don't look at the prices.

Ooh, this one is pretty. The prices though. Yikes. :confused2::lol:

I feel like that has got to he way over priced

Saturation 1 (in the description) - lowest in GIA terms, thus gray. There are traces of violet and green in this sapphire.

WWW

Warm purple-gray, smaller - WWW

Just popping in to say what by now may be obvious to you, lol. Grey is so...flat sounding. As a result, sellers tend to use terms like "silver," "platinum," "light lavender," "metallic," "titanium," "storm cloud" and/or "pewter." Hope that helps in your search.

That entire website is overpriced. The stones are gorgeous though. I hope Tlable01 finds her dream sapphire.

Jason Brim posted a 1.45ct grey sapphire on his Facebook, could check in with him? I've not purchased from him before.Screenshot_2017-08-17-18-54-44.png

Side note: for those looking at the prices on the M&W website, I said to ignore them. They don't sell directly to the public. In the end, it's up to the vendor they sell to to price the item(s), and it could end up being much lower.

I wasn't sure if you meant that as a "don't look. their prices are so high:???:." or a "don't look. the price may be lower." Glad to hear it may be the latter. :mrgreen2:

Thanks for noting this. I mentioned in my thread about my search for a royal blue sapphire, that I had been quoted a price for one of their stones at significantly lower than what the M&W website posted (roughly 1/3 less). I wasn't sure if this was a fluke or what ....

haha I see how my earlier comment could have come across that way, Elle, but I meant it as the latter. Thanks for pointing that out! And I'm glad you mentioned it in your thread diamond_newb - your experience was not a fluke!

Sorry for the threadjack. Back to the OP's quest...

Thats the first time I have ever even heard of a 'grey' spinel. But I looked at the top one there, and it looks nice. Are they specifically supposed to look more grey than a clear, white gem, or is 'grey' just the trade name for clear, white or uncolored gems?

Red Spinel: read this (https://thegemstoneproject.com/2014/09/30/spinels-scale-of-gray/) it might help. But no, gray is not just a term for clear or white spinel. There are actually grays! :) And there are colorless (or clear) spinels too, but those are pretty rare and hard to find.

tlable01: I think Jeff (of Earth's Treasury) might be a really good bet for you. I'd contact him and see if he could custom cut you something from his rough.

I Agee, that one is gorgeous!

Also agree that one is stellar.
