Hi...
If you don''t mind me asking...how much did everyone spend on hair/makeup? what about the bridal party?

i''m asking because i started looking around at that stuff online and it''s a small fortune! i''m in nyc which is part of the reason for the crazy prices but still. i can kind of rationalize it for me i guess, but i''d hate for the bm''s to spend so much if they want to have hair and makeup.

if anyone has hair/makeup artist suggestions in nyc feel free to let me know those as well!

I had my girls get their makeup done at Norstroms, and it came out great. I then called around to a few salons to see if any of their stylists traveled. I found one woman (the owner) who would and her rates were super reasonable. I got married on a Sunday, so the bigger issue for me was that very few salons (if any) are open on a Sunday. This woman''s thought was that she''s not open on Sunday, so any extra she makes is just bonus. This allows her to be really reasonable ($35).

Thanks Hudson!
The department stores are a good idea for makeup. I hadn''t thought of that. Or maybe even mac or sephora or something.

I know I''m way ahead of the game but I was trying to budget stuff out and when I looked at those prices I was like, what now??? crazy.

It seems like the minute you mention ''bridal'' the cost of stuff goes up 50%.

I''d caution you against Mac. People either love it or hate it. Personally, while I like their products, I''ve found that their artists are inconsistent. They either get it right and you look amazing or you look like a prostitute/clown/drag queen. I''ve heard great things about the artists at Sephora, though I''ve never had my makeup done there. I had mine done at Bobbi Brown (with mac lashes) for my wedding and I loved my makeup. The artist was fantastic and I love the products and colors.

I actually booked a make up artist who is going to travel to my location for makeup. They will be doing myself, all BM''s, and MOB/MOG for $185.
That price also includes a consultation at your home to try out different looks. I am actually going to my favorite hair stylist for hair because she does not travel. She charges $35 for an updo.

HH - I just read this, forgot what thread I was in, and thought you were talking about computers!! I was thinking, "I LOVE my Mac! What do you mean they''re inconsistent??" Then I realized you were talking about MAKEUP...

*sorry for the threadjack

To answer the original question - I live in NY and spent about $100 on hair and around $120 on makeup. That was for myself (and the trials were actually more in addition to that). My bridesmaids each got their makeup done somewhere else - one got it done at a Bobbi Brown counter in a department store (her makeup turned out great and all she had to do to pay was buy 3 items of makeup at the end which she had needed anyway), one hired someone to do it and decided she wanted to spend around $75 on it, and 2 of them did their own makeup.

We did our own makeup. Hair was $25 per person for myself and 4 bridesmaids.

Thanks everybody!

I''m finding that if i want the person to come to me it costs around $350 for hair/makeup for just me. BM''s aren''t much cheaper. I really would like them to come to wherever I''m getting ready for photography purposes but wow that''s expensive. I''ll have to keep researching! I''ve got time I guess.

I think I''ll tell my BM''s to pick whatever place that they feel comfortable with the price and not worry about it. Everyone can do things individually and just meet me wherever after. That''s probably the least stressful way to go about it.

Thanks again for your help!

Hope this isn't too late... my hair and make-up people came to us at the hotel for day of the wedding:

Stylist: She charged $175/hour. My trial was $100 and I went to her for that.

My MUA was airbrush. Mine was $75 for the trial and I went to them. The day of the wedding was $100 for me and $65 per BM. Then about $50 for travel.

For both of these people my time was 1 hour, and they alloted 30 min for the BM's.

My MUA/Hair stylist came to my hotel room as well and charged 250$ for me and 150 for each BM (for both hair and make-up). I LOVE MAC make-up and I would definitely recommend them. I agree with HH, sometimes you get artists who are colour-heavy, so what I would suggest is to go to the store and have someone try out a mini-makeover for you, and if you like it, ask them to write out the colours they used on the MAC info sheet. Then take this sheet to whoever it doing your make-up on the day of the wedding, so even though it might be a different MAC artist, they would use the same colours you''ve tried before and liked.

my trial was 250 i think?? that included hair and makeup. i thought it was good though bc it took her FOREVER to do my hair (i have way too much hair!). i think it is 300 for the day of. i don''t remember though. she is coming to our location which is about 45 minutes from her house.

Thanks Meresal!

Not too late. My wedding is still a year away (from tomorrow! yay!) I was just trying to budget stuff out at this point.

I think I''m fine with paying a little more than normal for my own hair and makeup but I got concerned for my BMs. Don''t want to ask them to pay insane amounts of $$ if they wanted to get their hair and makeup done. Did your hair stylist charge less for them? Seems like your MUA was reasonable when it came to that.

I actually paid for all of my BM''s as a girft. My hair stylist was incredible, so I definitely paid a premium for her. She just has a flat hourly fee when it comes to weddings, so if you break it up, mine was $175 and the BM''s were each $87.50.

The MUA broke it up by price, which wasn''t horrible, like you said.

I found both of my people on WeddingWire. It seemed liek the best place to get opinions strictly on how each of these people do for weddings.

Hair and makeup is expensive...and it really is one of those things that you get what you pay for.

For inexpensive ideas that can sometimes produce great work, call a beauty school or a makeup school. There is some real talent in those places, most students aren''t jaded yet and will you charge you very little and be very focused on making you happy.

Another idea is Craiglist. Especially in NYC. Under "services" click beauty...there will be a wealth of freelance artists looking for work. You may find a theatre artist, or a print artist looking for side money. You can even list your wedding looking for service...TFP, time for prints. Some people looking to build their book will sometimes take non-paying gigs if you supply them with quality photography of their work. This is a little known idea, but it can work. You just indicate this in your posting, and be sure to ask for work. Yes, you will have to pay for one-off pictures for the artist after your wedding and that can add up...but if you get free hair and makeup--it''ll be much less expensive.

My hair will be about $30 for both the trial and the actual day. I will be going to her, since she is literally on the way to the synagogue. And I kind of disagreed that you pay what you get for. I think you can get incredible work done if you find the right person/people.

I am uber lucky that one of my BM used to be a MAC artist, so she will be doing our make-up for free! I will likely buy some new products though for the wedding.

Thanks you guys! You''ve all given me a bunch of great ideas.

kama...i like mac a lot too. i''ll definitely have whoever does my trial write everything down. i would''ve forgotten to do that!

coco....i think $300 for hair and makeup is a pretty good deal for a bride!! and by the way, i don''t think it''s possible to have too much hair! i''m jealous!!

meresal...thank you again. I''m going to check out that link! i''m also considering doing the bm''s hair and mu as a gift if i can swing it pricewise.

italia...craigslist!! everything is possible on craigslist. i''ll take a look and see what i can find.

ilovesparkles....how lucky to have a makeup artist in your wedding party!! and it''s kind of special to have a friend do that for you. awesome.

You guys are soo helpful!! Thanks soooooo much.

bridal hair & makeup is $200, while the bms are each $90

hair = 65 pp and makeup 50$ pp.

My MUA is coming to the our room at the resort and her team will be doing me, 2 BMs, MOB, MOG, and 2 SILs. They are charging $190 for me, and $180 for everyone else, for hair and makeup.

She did a fabulous job on our trials, and I am super happy with her. I think her prices are very reasonable and on par with other travelling artists in Oz.

I actually did my own makeup, using products I purchased from Clinique and Mac. I certainly didn''t spend more than $50 on my makeup, as I also used products I already had. I''m actually pretty talented with makeup, so doing it myself was very easy.

As for my bridesmaids, I made sure everyone was gathered together early enough so that I could do their makeup for them. Doing makeup for people is very theraputic for me, and as I spent a lot of time in art school as a child/teen, I look at it as painting, lol. I would love to have been a makeup artist, I think.
